To some it’s famed for its historic steam trains and slate caverns; to others it’s a buzzing hive of outdoorsy activities. But whatever brings you to Blaenau Ffestiniog, it's a good bet to bag a berth at Quarry View Touring Park. This quiet touring park has been set up with life’s essentials in mind: a picnic area provides a place for open-air eats, and there’s a washing-up area, chemical disposal point and a waste area with recycling bins. Likewise, the shower blocks have been thoughtfully kitted out: benches and hooks save your clobber from damp patches and shaver points and a hairdryer will keep you looking dapper. And although there's no wifi on site, the presence of three mobile phone masts nearby means that most guests should be able to access 4G services. Any amenities that aren’t on site are most likely available nearby: it takes 10 minutes or so to walk into town for shops, a cinema, pubs and takeaways or to board a train from the station (regular services run from here to Llandudno and Betws-y-Coed as well as the heritage line to Porthmadog). Also within walking distance are the adrenaline activities at Zip World Llechwedd, including the Titan zipwire and Bounce Below, both set up in repurposed slate caverns. Looking to explore further afield? An excellent idea – this nifty location is under half an hour’s drive from Portmeirion, Harlech Castle and Snowdonia National Park.

Gostou The lovely lady, Janet, who greeted us on arrival. This site is absolutely immaculately kept and despite a lack of grass (Janet explained that this was to do with the heavy rainfall in the area) there is some lovely planting to make it look pretty. Everything is beautifully signposted on the Welsh grey slate and the facilities have Swiss chalet vibes. Even the bins area and Elsa point are immaculately kept with great little touches such as compostable bags for waste and gloves for use when emptying your chemical toilet.

Não gostou Nothing to dislike at all. Would have liked there to be laundry facilities as we were road tripping the whole of Wales and many sites visited didn’t have laundry facilities.

Gostou Very friendly greeting. Very quiet, small, adult only site, with amazing views of the slate mountains all around. A well maintained site with flowers and plants. Short walk to Morrisons.
Huge flat hard standing pitch - Loads of space. Clean utility block, with large showers, with choice of shower head and a bench and 5 hooks - great.
Will recommend and visit again.

Gostou - Secluded location in the mountain quarry
- extremely well laid out with slatted fences & greenery to mark pitches
- included electric & water in pitch fee
- very friendly welcome
- quiet & peaceful
- lovely wood panel chalet-style bathrooms/toilets
- so much printed info for local area by washing up sinks (even a weekly weather forecast!)
- slate products available for sale from local mine
- music in the showers/toilet block
- helpful signs for ease of use with all facilities
- good location for mountains/towns
- pub/shops within walking distance

After 8 nights travelling the whole of Wales in our campervan, this was our favourite site by far!

Gostou Fantastic site , was met by Janet gave us all the information we needed. Large pitches , lovely bathroom facilities , hot showers. Clean site . Level pitches . Highly recommend and will be returning soon. Great central place for visiting all around the Welsh coast.

Even if you’re not much of a train buff, it’s worth taking a trip on the Ffestiniog Railway – the steam-powered services take in some of Snowdonia’s most spectacular scenery as they wend their way down to the coast at Porthmadog. If you’ve got an appetite for more, connect here for the Welsh Highland Railway all the way up to Caernarfon. If you’d like to explore under your own steam, there are heaps of hikes in the surrounding Snowdonia National Park – Snowdon itself is just a few miles away, or you may prefer a quieter clamber up Crimpiau from Capel Curig or a circuit of Llyn Idwal from Ogwen Cottage for something a bit less leg-busting (both routes about half an hour's drive). The site is also a few minutes’ amble from the Antur Stiniog mountain bike trails, with an uplift service that’s been tipped as the country’s best. Not enough adrenaline yet? The site is also a 10-minute stroll from Titan ZipWorld (to fly along two kilometres of zipline) and the underground adventure park in an old slate cavern at Bounce Below. Calm that heart rate a little by heading coastwards for a trip to pretty Portmeirion or a wander around the castle and beach in Harlech – both are about half an hour away by car.
