Tick off Brecon and Pen Y Fan in one go, try out trout fishing on the Honddu river or hike to the local Iron Age hillfort. That’s a lot right there – and that scratches the surface of a getaway to Pytingwyn Woods. This four-acre wildlife haven is just five minutes’ drive from Brecon, where there are shops and restaurants, art galleries and the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh. Hiking is also on the cards. When you’re not tackling Pen Y Fan 15 minutes’ drive away, make your way onto the one-hour circular walk that goes from the site to the top of Pen-y-Crug. This peak has an Iron Age hillfort overlooking the Usk Valley. The same route takes you to the edge of town, but there’s another public footpath that heads there across farmland and woods. From Brecon, there are more pleasant walks on the river Usk promenade and along the Brecon Canal. Countryside walks are never too far off either, but for more big hikes in the Brecon Beacons, a good starting point is to visit the Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre and Tearooms (20 minutes’ drive). So, what’s it like at Pytingwyn Woods? There’s a mix of the countryside, woodland and river. The four acres are split into two acres of grasslands and two acres of woodlands, with the river Honddu forming the boundary (this is a good spot for trout fishing, by the way). The woodland is classed as an ancient site, so there are many interesting plant species to scope out. It also contains the remains of a road from the Middle Ages, which was built between Brecon and Builth Wells. The site owner has aimed to create a rural experience for all, including dogs and large groups. Firepits are welcome, as are tree hammocks, aerial tents and those who want to sleep in the open air. Under fives go free.

Gostou Nice tranquil setting a short drive out of Brecon town on a secluded lane. Nice calm friendly horse on site, host relaxed and rightly so proud of this riverside haven.
Some people decided to pitch right on the river bank we chose the wind break of the hill to pitch. Fire rings are provided so use at your own risk, we had a fire every night but had sand and water on board to put it out out. Also take care going over the little bridge take your time and use your mirrors I got my Renault traffic van across no problems. Amazing place to look at the stars too as no light pollution whatsoever. Beautiful for star gazing. Really great place and also has a compost toilet onsite for your convenience which did not smell
If you follow the rules (scoop of sawdust after each use)

Gostou We absolutely loved our camping experience. We went for the weekend. Friday to Sunday. We arrived Friday evening and there were 3 other campers in the field and 3 campers in the woods. The 3 campers in the field left early on Saturday morning so we had the field to ourselves until Saturday evening when 3 other campers arrived. We took our 2 dogs with us and they loved running around the field and we didn't have to worry about our dogs bothering other people.

Não gostou Not sure if there is a gun range close but we heard gun shots. One of our dogs doesn't like loud bangs so she was anxious from the first gun shot and kept going into the car to try to get away from the bangs.

Gostou The location was great, we were down near the river in the woodland, plenty of space.

We met Dave the owner and George the horse. Dave was very welcoming and gave us since if the history of the location.

Gostou Pytingwyn was a great rustic campsite. Really felt like wild camping in the woods. Beautiful small river for the kids to play in. Very basic, but if you are used to camping it shouldn't be a problem.

Gostou Upon arrival in the campsite we realized how lovely it is. It is a decent size main field with lots of room to park a car and set up a tent, a very short walk into the woods and you find yourself with an amazing view of the river. We had a very private camping trip as there were only 2 other tents with us on the whole campsite our kids loved sleeping in the woods by the river with a campfire in the evening! With fishing allowed on site our kids have had the opportunity to experience fishing for the first time in their life, unfortunately we found that no fish were present in the river which didn't really matter as we only wanted for our kids to experience the activity.

Não gostou Might have to watch your step as we found quite a bit of horse manure around the campsite, some of the flat spaces where a tent would fit perfectly was instead unusable due to manure on the ground.
