Think of Scotland and think castles, whisky, stunning scenery… Want them all? Get along to Delny Glamping, a family-friendly glampsite five minutes’ drive from the port town of Invergordon in the northern Highlands. This is a particularly pretty site, in the grounds of the fab Delny House and with views towards Cromarty Firth. But before setting out from the site, spend a while poking around – wander the woodland, meet and feed the chickens, ducks and pygmy goats, and send the kids off to shiver their timbers walking the plank at the pirate ship playground. It’s not just the resident farm animals that get a feed either: humans can indulge themselves thoroughly by ordering a breakfast hamper to be delivered to their door the next morning (very much recommended), and evening meals can be sorted by sparking up the barbecue hut in the walled garden. Supermarkets in Invergordon and Alness (10 minutes) should take care of ingredients. The site's handily placed when it comes time to venture out: the famed North Coast 500 passes the site entrance along the A9, making it an absolute cinch to get to spectacular Highlands spots like John o’ Groats (a two-hour drive) and local castles and distilleries.

Whisky Barrel micro alojamento (proibido para pets)

Gostou: The location, just stunning The welcome, felt instantly relaxed The effort that has gone into the accommodation is on another level, each whisky barrel (tiny house) has its own name and a greeting card to welcome you there, just a lovely gesture from the owner. Inside; super comfy bed with fresh linen; spotlessly clean wet room with a sink, shower and toilet, kettle with tea and coffee provided and a quirky night light, also a tv and a heater; outside seating and a fire pit. Oh, there's a mini farm too, with chickens, goats and pigs. I took some photos but they don’t do Delny justice, just go there and see for yourself

Gostou: We stayed in the wee Nip whiskey pod which was unique and very well equipped with good use of space and facilities. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful. The grounds were beautiful and the breakfast provided was excellent.

Gostou: The warm welcome from Paul, lovely setting, good size of pod, plenty of room for cases, lovely being on the farm, being able to access the animals night or day, the swing park for kids on site and the grounds were bigger than we expected.

Atrações locais

Fans of a wee dram are certainly in the right place: Dalmore distillery is just five minutes’ drive down the road for tours and tastings, and further nips can be had at Balblair, Glenmorangie, Glen Ord and Clynelish, all within 45 minutes of base. More interested in the castle part of the equation? Start with Foulis Castle, 20 minutes away (tours are by appointment only), then continue on to absolutely stunning Dunrobin Castle (35 minutes) to explore the castle, museum and gardens, and to take in the falconry displays. A little further afield, on the shores of Loch Ness (keep eyes peeled for the monster, of course), are the ruins of Urquhart Castle – the artefacts and replicas (including a working trebuchet) make it a worthy stop. Pass back through the city of Inverness (40 minutes) – with pitstops for shopping in the Victorian Market, strolling in the botanic gardens or nabbing a berth on a dolphin spotting tour – on the way to Culloden (35 minutes from base), the site of the final bloody battle of a Jacobite rebellion led by Bonnie Prince Charlie himself.
