Geral

The Country Retreats tents are positioned at a stunning location close to the lake and all equipped with proper working showers and flushing toilets as well as comfortable mattresses and over 45 square metres of living space with the private hot tub next to each tent to make sure you enjoy the great outdoors on this remarkable estate in full relaxation.

Your encampment is down by the estate lake. The Whewell children grew up there damming streams, sailing wooden boats and building camp fires in the woods. They invite you and your family to come and do much the same. At the bottom of your garden is a 500 acre fell with magnificent views onto the Irish Sea. The sunsets in this part of England are of national fame – viewed from Grizedale Fell they are even finer!

Two years ago, we opened we The Apple Store Cafe, situated in the walled garden where you check in.We are open Wednesday - Sunday from 9am until 4pm and have a wide selection of hot and cold sandwiches, soups and cakes. All our produce is local and home made on the premises. Our chef can also prepare a selection of ready meals if you fancy a change from cooking!

Our hearts leapt when we saw Wyresdale Park for the first time - this is surely the original setting for Swallows and Amazons. A lake for boating and swimming, a hill rising up from its shore and countryside characters just like Arthur Ransome described them. The estate is on the doorstep of the Lake District but better than that, it is private. Forget the traffic and crowds of Windermere, this is all yours - Grizedale Fell, Nicky Nook and all.

Sally and James Whewell are proud and more than happy to welcome you to their beautiful estate here at Wyresdale. Their house was built in the middle of the 19th century for Captain Ormrod, an industrialist-turned-banker based in Lancashire, the centre of the Industrial Revolution and dynamo behind the British Empire. With pleasure gardens, exquisite stone buildings and flora from around the world, Wyresdale Park is a testimony to the wealth of that era. Nether Wyresdale is still studded with the archaeology of the past and much of the culture of past centuries with hunting, sheep farming and fishing still prevalent.

The survivors of Ormrod’s hounds and the wild and graceful fallow deer, still roam free here. Old fishing ponds, now hidden by woods, can still be found. Wyresdale has changed little in the last 200 years.

Venturing out of the Estate, from upland pastures and moorland, to deep wooded valleys, the Forest of Bowland is wild and magnificent. The Abbeystead Estate, The Duke of Westminster’s sporting jewel, can be walked around; the Inn at Whitewell is in the neighbouring valley, a multi-award winning and wonderfully eccentric stone inn reputed to have inspired Tolkein.

The natural beauty of the estate recently caught the eye of Ruth Watson of Channel Four fame. Wyresdale park was the subject of an episode of Country House Rescue in spring 2011, where the focus was on the its regeneration, 21st centry style.

Como chegar

From the north
Take the M6 heading south and exit at junction 33, signed for Lancaster/A6. Join the A6 heading south. After four miles take the left turning signed posted for Scorton (a fish and chip restaurant is located by this exit). Follow the road
into the village of Scorton for about a mile (you will go over the river Wyre and under the railway tracks). In the centre of Scorton turn right and then left, driving through the village centre, past the pub and up Snowhill Lane. Follow Snowhill Lane for a further mile until you come a crossroads where you will see signs for Country House Hideout and Apple Store Cafe. Follow these to the car park.

From the south
Take the M6 heading north and exit at junction 32, leading onto the M55. Exit the M55 at junction 1, signed for Preston/A6 (this exit is only 400 metres after you join the M55 so be careful not to drive past it). Take the A6
heading north for about 8 miles, through the village of Billsborrow and past the market town of Garstang. Once past Garstang, take the right turn signposted for Scorton (opposite a garage named Ball and Hargreves). Follow this road into Scorton; at the village centre take a right turn up Snowhill Lane, driving past the local pub, Stouts. Follow Snowhill Lane for a further a mile until you come to a crossroads where you will see signs for Country House Hideout. Follow these to the car park.

Atrações locais

Swimming
The children grew up swimming in the lake and we still take the occasional dip. The northern end of the lake, where your hideout is located, is very shallow and great for paddling. The southern end is deeper and is perfect for a bracing swim. We heartily recommend it!

Walking
There are great circular walks around, up and over Nicky Nook Fell and Grizedale Valley. The valley and fell are an integral part of Wyresdale Park, and are much loved by walkers. The walks are between one and four miles.

The wider area
The village of Scorton is a stroll away down Snowhill Lane. The Barn has an excellent tea room and an extensive collection of plants for sale; Stouts has good local ales, wines and food. Both are very child friendly.

The market town of Garstang is three miles away and has the big supermarkets – we would urge you use Booths as it stocks excellent local produce.

As a treat we would recommend driving up the dale and into the heart of Bowland. Sitting on the banks of the River Hodder in the neighbouring valley can be found the nationally acclaimed Inn at Whitewell. Run by the Bowman family it provides open fires, excellent food and drinks and is again very pet and child friendly. The drive itself is stunning, passing through lands owned by the Duke of Westminster and the Royal Family.
