Free-range kids? Flapping around a car-free environment in Cumbria’s heavenly Eden Valley close to the Lake District National Park? You’d be in a pretty pickle to pick the Main attraction at peaceful, popular and family-run Mains Farm Camping and Caravan Site, but it might be parents gleefully clinking glasses in the child-friendly landscape while the kids run around… Anglers and bikers flock here too as the farm has its own single bank salmon and trout fishing hotspot 200 metres up the road (arrange on arrival) and it’s used by cyclists as a stopoff to rest weary bones on a C2C pedal. This is the Cumbrian countryside, so scenic hikes come as additional standard: take one of the Mains Farm trails across their own land to feel proper exclusive. The Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall and Gretna Green on the Scottish border are all 20 to 40 minutes’ drive away. But back to the kids… wind them up and let them roam: although Mains Farm is easy to get to from the M6, it’s well away from roads and is small enough to keep an eye on their movements; all cars have to be parked away from the pitching areas too. All this and a popular playground: expect not to see offspring from dawn to dusk… Campfires are allowed – hire a fire basket from amiable owners Robert and Julia – and an undercover eating area has a log burner and a barbecue. Guests also have use of two kitchen areas, a secure store for bicycles, a washing machine, decent wifi, and clean shower and toilet blocks converted from the farm’s former stables. Supplies can be sorted from the small supermarket in Lazonby village about a mile away; if you’re feeling too lazy/holidaylike to cook, two pubs serving food are within the same distance (ask Robert or Julia to book you a table in advance: like Mains Farm, the village pubs are pretty popular).

Gostou What an amazing find this site was! Owners are so welcoming, gorgeous old farm (rustic all the way!) and to top it off we happened to stay one night when they had live music! ( don’t panic it wasn’t late, and super family friendly) the whole experience was fab! Loved it ❤️

Gostou Loved the site, the surrounding areas, easy to access the fields for walks, and the parks were well maintained for the young ones to play safely, the music and live entertainment on the Saturday was amazing, everyone was up dancing and the atmosphere was perfect

Gostou Beautiful campsite in a lush setting. The owners were absolutely lovely and couldn't do enough for you, so welcoming. So many walks from the site along the river etc and a great base to explore the rest of the Lake District. Honesty shop and fire basket hire was great, plenty of space between pods
/Tents etc. We were lucky enough to be there whilst there was a live singer and pizza night, brilliant touch and we really enjoyed it, great atmosphere. Will definitely visit again.

Não gostou Toilets and showers were clean enough however one thing I think I'd suggest is keeping maybe a mop (or equivalent) in the shower rooms for people to (hopefully) clean up after themselves and wipe down as the floors outside the showers became quite wet and muddy at times.
Another thing to add also which is no fault to the owners was that if you are staying by the play park it can be quite noisy, and was annoying at times which kind of spoiled the peaceful vibe of the site. I have kids so totally get kids having fun and the noise etc which is fine, but this was more then causing trouble etc, parents weren't really checking in on them. Again no fault of the owners but just to bare in mind, especially if you don't have kids😂

Do gerente: Thank you for your lovely review. We take on board the comments regarding the floors. It is a little like the Forth Road Bridge keeping them clean - especially when it is wet and even more when the grass has just been cut.
We have two Camping Pod Fields - one closer to the play park than the other. I spend a lot of time allocating and moving bookings so that people with no children are on Cart Horse Field and those with children are in The Orchard Field. I do get that not all parents check on their children - it is frustrating for us on the safety front more than anything. Its a difficult one.

Gostou The park was spacious, safe and clean. The hosts were welcoming and helpful. We stayed in a pod, which was perfect for a little adventure. It had lighting and electrics and we paid extra for some wood to have a camp fire. The play park was close by, with the options of a walk to the river and town if you wanted it. The shop with honesty box was a lovely touch.

Não gostou Nothing. Only scored lower on wifi as you’d struggle to access the internet unless you’re in the Wi-Fi area. Not a bad thing unless you need it.

Gostou This has now become our favourite campsite after 1 visit. Very well managed and run. The campsite was very quiet at night and in the mornings. Plenty of kids there playing in the play area so my boys were so entertained I read a whole book.
The owners of the campsite are lovely, very friendly and helpful. The facilities are very clean. There’s toasters, kettles, a small fridge and a freezer. Everything was clean and well maintained. We will definitely be back

Gostou Friendly and welcoming owners.
Great facilities with a toaster/kettle/microwave. Hot water and showers!
Lovely views and short walk to the river, we paddle boarded and it was amazing. Great base to explore. We had no problem with signal or internet. Camping pod was clean and saved us from packing up a wet tent if it was to rain!

Não gostou Lots of wasps (can’t be helped! It’s summer!) but I recommend bringing a fly swat or something.

Gostou Great facilities, clean toilets and good hot shower with great water pressure.
Lovely little park for the children.
River for wild swimming on site (strong current probably not for children)
Hosts were very friendly and helpful without being overbearing.
Nice little honesty shop on site.
Great views.
Pods nice and clean and also well insulated (our one year old slept well even with a group of us talking outside the pod)
There is a room where you can access wifi although we enjoyed the lack of internet access.
Site is remote although local villages a short drive away.

Gostou Campsite was lovely and clean, big pitch sizes so is not cramped or close to others. Facilities are clean and we really enjoyed the honest shop. Couldn’t fault the owners lovely and helpful would return again.

Não gostou There is not much to do around the campsite about a 20-30 minute drive for something however not the fault of the owners

Heavenly Eden Valley walks are right on the doorstep from Mains Farm Camping and Caravan Site, from ambles to (the pubs at) Lazonby, to a hike along the River Eden to see Lacy's Caves... and then on to Little Salkeld and the Bronze Age stone circle of Long Meg and her Daughters. Ramble to the north of Little Salkeld to see the Eden Lacy Viaduct over the River Eden, one of a couple of dozen viaducts on the 72-mile journey of the Carlisle to Settle Railway (jump on at Lazonby and Kirkoswald railway station to puff north west to Carlisle or south to Settle). Going north for the day – actually, allow at least two – Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish border are around 40 minutes’ drive away.
