Check out those views… family-run Gill Head Farm is a scenic place indeed, with a backdrop of Blencathra and the Northern Fells. And it’s a cinch to get to as well – this site on the banks of Trout Beck is less than a mile from the A66, so you can get your fix of proper rural time without having to navigate miles of winding lanes. It’s often said that visitors to the Lake District National Park are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities – and that’s certainly true at this Cumbria site. Days of hikes, horse riding, watersports, climbing, visiting historic houses and wild swimming are among the many options around here. If you don’t know where to start, have a chat with the owners – as outdoorsy folk themselves they’re happy to help plan your adventures and offer up local tips. Whatever you get up to by day, it also must be noted that those views make a great setting for an evening by the campfire – handily, there are firepits to hire on site, and bags of logs and kindling for sale. What if it’s not campfire weather? Retreat to the indoor communal area which has comfy seating, a dining area and a little kitchen area (with microwaves, kettles, a fridge and a freezer) – or take the 15-minute walk to the local pub. To stock up on food for your barbecues/picnics there are plenty of shops in Penrith and Keswick, both 15 minutes’ drive away (or get to Keswick on the bus). Back at base, facilities include a laundry room and a shower/toilet block with spacious and clean amenities. Please note that group bookings are strictly not allowed at Gill Head Farm. Due to the rural location, the wifi also does not cover the whole site and is limited to a hotspot in the communal room.

Gostou the customer service was great. the site was open all day, so we popped into Penrith late on the evening to get supplies. We could park the car close to our pitch but cars and tents are separate. free showers, free wifi, communal room w kettles and toasters etc. view was solid. peacock a nice surprise. great location. the A66 is a fast road from Penrith and into Keswick.

Não gostou showers could give a bit more hot water for a longer period of time. also the midges were fierce pack or plan accordingly

Gostou Incredible. The Cabin was exactly what we wanted / needed / hoped for. It is isolated away which is incredible as it makes you feel like nobody is around. Incredibly helpful staff members nothing was too much trouble. The facilities were immaculate and kept in such good condition. We had our own private Bbq and firepit and the coal and wood was cheap to buy from the reception. It is a hidden gem and we will certainly be coming back!!

Gostou Excellent campsite, with everything you could need. Plenty of space for tents so not on top of other people, grass was nice and flat all over. Cars parked on hard standing was great to stop the grass being spoilt, and the hard standing was right next to where you pitch so easy to get things out of the car. We had a picnic table next to our tent too which was great for sitting eating breakfast at. Toilets and showers were immaculate and the showers were hot, lovely to use after a long day walking and bonus of not being freezing afterwards. There was even a place to put our dog outside so we didn't have to put him in the car whilst getting showered. The communal area was good for relaxing in and charging phones. The label system and labels provided for fridge items was also good. We didn't use the on site shop but was good to know it was there if needed. Owners are very friendly too. This is definitely one we will be going back to when we are in this area.

Great location near to Ulswater, Keswick and Penrith.

Nice pub 20 mins away - need to book! Don't just turn up like we did as you'll be turned away...like we were!

Gostou Great location, easy to navigate to. Lots of thought put into the site. Loved the communal building, this was a lifesaver during our very windy stay. Kettles, microwave, fridge freezer, TV a few games to play along with comfy sofas and heating. The site is very well maintained and in a beautiful location. Clean toilet and shower blocks. An onsite shop for bits and bobs etc. It was a 17 minute walk to the local pub, we had a lovely meal there. The location is great for Keswick/Derwent Water/Ullswater/Penrith. Our pitch was non electric and we had amazing views of Blencathra. Friendly and helpful owners, always on the go.

Não gostou There really was nothing to dislike about the location or the campsite.

We had very, very challenging weather with wind gusts of up to 45 mph plus it had rained heavily (such a shame for June) which resulted in our tent pegs not staying secure, because of this, we did cut short our stay by one night as our tent couldn't take the battering. We definitely learned a lot about camping in high wind.

However we definitely would return here in the future, as I can imagine it would have been a beautiful and relaxing break.

Não gostou nothing really coupe of people were a bit noisy around 830 going back and forwards to there cars i know they were probably leaving but some of us like a lie in on holiday

Ullswater is the nearest of the lakes at 10 minutes’ drive away, so that’s as good a place to start as any – stop by at Aira Force waterfall on your way down there, then get down to the lake itself for waterside walks, steamer cruises and various watersports – or even a wild swim if you’re feeling brave. Over on the banks of Derwentwater, Keswick (15 minutes’ drive) is another good place to explore, with a brewery, The Puzzling Place and the Derwent Pencil Museum as well as boat trips and paddleboards to hire. Walkers of all varieties have much to choose from around here, from gentle lakeside wanders to uphill scrambles at Blencathra and Helvellyn, both of which are close by. The folk on the farm are happy to suggest routes to suit – or point you towards the likes of Dalemain Mansion (15 minutes), Mirehouse & Gardens (20 minutes) or Lowther Castle (25 minutes) for stately-home strolls.
