If you live for long walks on the beach – perhaps accompanied by your four-legged companion, and maybe at sunset (which can be pretty spectacular along this stretch of the Solway Coast, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) – Old Kiln Farm, on a working farm about 100 metres from Allonby Beach, might well be the place for you. This peaceful, family-friendly site has far-reaching views over a dramatic landscape of intertidal flats and sand dunes to the west, and mossy lowlands and Skiddaw Mountain, in the Lake District, to the east. Oh, and the Scottish coastline and hills to the north. It feels pretty remote here – but you’re not completely cut off from the world: the coastal village of Allonby is less than five minutes’ drive away (if you fancy walking, it will take you about 20 minutes), with its convenience store, ice-cream parlour, fish and chip shop and a couple of pubs. There is also a bike-hire place in the village, so you can explore the coast on two wheels and get to places like Silloth in about 40 minutes (15 minutes by car). As you pedal along the promenade here, keep your eyes peeled for porpoises off the coast. Back at the site, get the barbecue or the campfire going (firepits are provided but you'll need to bring your own wood), and settle down for an evening under the big Cumbrian skies. Amenities include a communal kitchen (with two gas burners, a sink and a range of crockery and cutlery) and a toilet block with showers. For an additional fee, site owners Vera and Phil also provide bedding.

Gostou Amazing time staying at the Old Kiln Farm. The owners are lovely, friendly and super helpful.
They had a number of toilets around and had a really nice shower room too.
It was really clean all the time.
The location is great in a nice little town not fair from shops or the Lake District.

Gostou We absolutely loved staying here! We received a very warm welcome, the shepherds hut was clean and warm with all the facilities we required. We loved being surrounded by fields of sheep and cattle, but a 2 minute walk down the regularly cut lawn path takes us to a wonderful pebbly beach. Perfect place to rest and explore in all weathers!

Gostou The gorgeous pod and surroundings felt like a real treat after being in a tent for a few days. The beach and views were stunning. The Lowther Arms community pub up the road in Mawbray served amazing food which was a good find vid Allonby was quite limited for dog friendly options.

Não gostou The lighting in the shared kitchen hut was a bit hit and miss. And a toaster would be a good edition (not sure if you can get a gas fueled one 😂).

Gostou had a fenced garden, it was perfect for me and the dog. Also liked that the pods were nicely spaced out, we’ll definitely stay again.
Really lovely and helpful welcome on arrival and clean site with good facilities particularly the electric cool box in the hut which was really helpful

Gostou Loved the location and Phil was really friendly and welcoming on arrival. The hut although basic had everything I needed for my short stay.
The location is very quiet and peaceful just what I needed. A microwave in the little cooking hut would have been a nice addition but I ate out at the local pub, the ship inn, which was also very friendly.
Thanks for a nice relaxing stay.

Gostou Excellent stay in the camping pods. They were nice and clean, with enough space to store our luggage. Waking up with a flock of sheep on the other side of the window was great!

Não gostou There is a small kitchen, but would not recommend cooking an entire meal. Making pasta did work out well.

On the edge of the Lake District, Cockermouth (20 minutes) is a lively market town famed as the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Visitors can learn all about this Romantic poet at the National Trust-run Wordsworth House and Garden, on the banks of the River Derwent, before heading to the ruins of the 12th-century castle. A leafy path skirts the western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake (half an hour), where you might spot assorted birdlife, including curlews and ospreys. The lake is also a popular destination for watersports enthusiasts, or you can visit the Lakes Distillery for a guided tour with tastings of locally made whisky, gin and vodka. Stretching along the River Eden, Carlisle (45 minutes) is dominated by a medieval castle. Check out the tower where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner in the mid-1500s and Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, with audiovisual displays on the regional infantry regiment.
