Fancy a trip to England’s deepest lake? Perhaps a scramble up the country’s highest mountain? Both of these (Wast Water and Scafell Pike, of course) are within easy reach of The Barn Campsite, as are plenty of other top spots including Coniston Water, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the Cumbria coastline. From this Lake District site between Eskdale and Holmrook there are some fine views to be had out over the Eskdale Valley and plenty of space from which to enjoy them. It’s a pitch-free setup here, so you can simply take a wander around and pick the spot that suits you best. Flushing toilets, rubbish bins and three drinking water stations are provided for guests’ use. Raised firepits are allowed on site; along with firewood, the firepits are available from the site at an extra cost. (and in general you’re asked to be considerate and respect the countryside). This is a properly green and rural location (as you’ll spot from the accompanying pics) but it’s not devoid of local amenities – it’s a 10-minute walk to a local pub for some great food and real ales. A little further along the road (a mile and a bit away) is a village store, and there’s a small supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Holmrook (which also has a pub and some great salmon fishing on the River Irt).

Gostou Peaceful area with a couple of pubs not too far away. Nice views. Campsite also offers the necessities. Hot showers, place to wash pots and pans, a good number of toilets. Host was excellent and is always saying hello and greeting people. Highly recommend and would stay again.

Gostou Jonnty was an amazing host, he was extremely helpful and went above and beyond, even offering an alternative date as the weather forecast wasn’t looking good. We decided to stick with the plan anyway and had a great time despite the wet weather. The field has good solid ground so didn’t become waterlogged meaning we kept dry. We made sure to utilise the very handy sheltered drying rack for wet clothes.

The location is beautiful and peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy areas of the Lakes.

Facilities are great with a good number of toilets and a shower, you can tell they have been thoughtfully constructed with automatic lights etc.

10/10 would recommend this excellent value campsite.

Gostou Great location to go hiking around Scarfell pike. The Field is flat and the owner supplies fire pits to have your own campfire.

There's a great pub just 10 min walk down the road that does fantastic food and good pints. The Owner can give you fresh eggs (for a small cost) from his chickens for breakfast in the morning.

Owner is cracking guy and very chilled will deffo be stopping over again.

Toilets and showers are basic and clean, Cant complain as some campsites don't offer anything. There is a place to wash your dishes and sit if the weather is bad.

Gostou Everything. The place was great, the host was great. Really lovely guy. Location is really good for getting to a nice pub with good food. Petrol station isn't too far away. Honestly was a great find!

Gostou beautiful location, all facilities that were required were present, very welcoming and respectful hosting with extra chairs being offered for us to use free of charge, fire pits available with fire wood available for purchase

Gostou We had an amazing long weekend stay here. The campsite has all the facilities that one needs - hot showers, clean toilets, pot washing area, fire pits, and a common area in case it rains. The owner is super friendly and attentive to anything you may need. The site is conveniently close to Scafell pike and Wast Water.

Gostou Loads of space, toilets and shower facilities are perfect. And free wi-fi is always useful!

Its the perfect campsite for people wanting to do scafel pike, we stayed for a weekend.

Coop only 15 min drive away and the host is so helpful and knowledgeable on the area to make our stay as easy and as stress free.

Get set to see some of the Lake District’s most famed sights on outings from The Barn – it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to Wast Water, 20 minutes to the dramatic cascades of Stanley Ghyll waterfall or 40 minutes to Coniston Water for boat trips and sailing courses. If you’d like a little more of an uphill challenge, scramble up Sca Fell (15 minutes’ drive) or the slightly taller Scafell Pike (25 minutes). Alternatively, for a much gentler day out, sign up for llama or alpaca trekking at The Woolly Farm (five minutes). There’s plenty of heritage around here too: perhaps you’d like to mooch around Muncaster Castle (10 minutes) to see the haunted castle and hawk centre, or visit the atmospheric ruins of Egremont Castle (20 minutes). A ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (10 minutes) is a good way to mix up a bit of scenery and a sense of past times. Looking out towards the coast instead, you may like to head to the seaside at Seascale (15 minutes), where there’s a beach and a golf course.
