Truly wild in setting, but comfy in style – North Yorkshire’s Coast and Camplight is a place that’s managed to create a fabulous blend for guests that value both peace and comfort. Three miles from Whitby and with lovely views down to the town, its abbey and the sea, this site has a wonderfully secluded feeling to it, with ancient woodland on one side and wildflower fields on the other. Those protected habitats mean this place is teeming with wildlife – look out for the resident barn owls, along with deer, badgers, bats and all sorts of birds. To preserve that natural setting, no cars are allowed on site – you’ll leave your car at the gate and use a wheelbarrow to transport your kit to your bell tent (with someone on hand to help out if needed). The site is also completely off grid, with no wifi and only intermittent phone signal – just the place for a digital detox. Solar lighting, compost toilets and lots of upcycled materials mean this site is kind to the environment. There’s still a real element of luxury as well, though, with proper beds, fluffy towels and luxury bedding provided. You’ll have the use of a one-of-a-kind rotating outdoor kitchen and a firepit area with a hanging griddle so you can have a go at cooking over fire. Cuddling up by the campfire is a lovely way to keep warm, but you'll be pleased to hear there's also a hot shower available for guests. If you’d rather head out in search of food, there are two nice (and dog-friendly) pubs about a mile away, and a farm with homemade ice cream just under an hour's walk away.

Gostou Simple and very quiet site that suited my needs perfectly. Great location too. The well stocked, onsite shop was a welcome surprise with an added bonus of the use of a kettle. A great help for a bikepacker and saves on JetBoil gas.

Não gostou The only very minor issue for me was due to the cycling route I took to the site. The actual tent pitch area is across the road from the main site. There was a sign to identify this but it was angled in the opposite direction to my route in. I just didn't see it and I ended up pitching in the wrong place. The owner was lovely but, understandably, I did have to move.

Gostou Nice quiet site with great views over Whitby. Ideal for a back to basics stay at a realistic cost/night without the trappings of many campsites.

Não gostou Nothing really. The compost toilets may not be to everyone’s liking but they work well.

Gostou Lovely peaceful site… Will definitely return if in the area. Stayed on the grass no electric hook up grassed area. Only us in our VW T6 and one other motorhome.

Gostou Nice quiet site, gorgeous pop up restaurant, loved the honesty shop. Felt very safe as a solo female camper. Ed and Verity were really welcoming. It was a really nice stay and I had a great time!

Gostou We absolutely love staying here and keep coming back. The location is fantastic with amazing views, and the pitches are really well spaced out so you never feel on top of anyone else. The owners are lovely, welcoming and always friendly.

There are only basic facilities (a tap, toilet and a handy little honesty shop), but for us that's perfect as we're completely self-sufficient. It's such a peaceful place to relax and unwind, and one of our favourite sites. We spend the winter counting down the days until it opens again each season, and we'd already booked our next stay before we'd even left!

The Outpost tenda em forma de sino

Gostou We had the most wonderful bank holiday stay at this beautiful off-grid campsite near Whitby. The setting was so peaceful, with incredible views over Whitby Abbey, especially at sunset — absolutely stunning.

The wildlife was amazing too. We were lucky enough to see a barn owl and hear so many birds around the campsite including oyster catchers, curlews, wrens and meadow pipits. It felt completely immersed in nature.

Our tent was gorgeous, with such thoughtful decor and lovely little touches throughout. The bed was incredibly comfortable, with cosy throws and blankets, fairy lights inside and lanterns outside that made the evenings feel really magical.

We loved sitting around the campfire cooking food and relaxing under the stars. The honesty shop onsite was such a great idea too and really added to the friendly, trusting atmosphere.

Ed and Verity were fantastic hosts and it’s clear how much care, thoughtfulness and attention they’ve put into creating this special place. We’ll definitely be recommending it to others and can’t wait to return ourselves.

Atrações locais

Start by taking a stroll to see your surroundings – there are lots of lovely walks from the site, and about a mile away you can link up with the Cinder Track, a disused railway line running to Whitby or Robin Hood’s Bay. You can also follow part of the Coast to Coast trail, which passes through the farm. A little beck in the woods is a nice place to cool off with a paddle when you return. Having seen Whitby from afar you’ll surely want to get down there to explore. If you're not walking, you can drive down there in about 10 minutes to visit the abbey, 199 Steps and Captain Cook Memorial Museum, wander through the historic streets and grab fish and chips on the beach. For more outings, Robin Hood’s Bay and Falling Foss Tea Garden are both 10 minutes’ drive away, and it’s a 20-minute drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Goathland.
