No newborns allowed at Newbourne Woodland Campsite… and no babies, toddlers or children of any size either: this sought-after and much-loved site in the Suffolk countryside is exclusively adults-only. And set up for those of age to forget grown-up concerns too, as it’s in a birdsong-cheeping wood for frolicking childlike among trees, among countryside for frolicking among paths, fields and hedgerows – and less than six miles from the coast for frolicking on the beach at Felixstowe and buying freshly caught fish to sizzle up later under the stars. And it’s less than five miles from fab Saxon burial site Sutton Hoo – and dogs are welcome too. Hurrah! Bring a torch, ditch the smartphone, find your own woody pitch and get back to nature at one of tent pitches among the woods (Newbourne Woodland owners Jen and Larry planted almost three acres of trees 20 years ago to create the semi-wild woodland now open to guests who’d like to channel their inner child/adventurous spirits by camping among the trees). Campfires are allowed on site (but of course), using the free-to-hire barbecues and fire baskets. The campsite is on the edge of Newbourne village near Woodbridge to procure provisions at the farm shop and at Jen and Larry’s family nursery; procure pints and pub meals at the mature seventeenth century pub The Fox an easy amble away. Electric absolutely essential? Bed down in the woodland cabin, a converted showman’s trailer that’s all powered up with electric shower, CD player and radio along with flushing loo, double bedroom and fully-equipped kitchen. Hairdryer, lashings of hot water and ‘back to basics but with all mod cons’ also absolutely essential? Facilities at Newbourne Woodland Campsite are up to date, well-maintained and all free, including comfy and separate ladies’ and gents’ washrooms with hot water around the clock and an electric socket in the ladies’ shower to plug in hairdryers or other holiday necessities. Guests can also duck into the Elephant Shed to use the electric points there or warm up at the woodburning stove while reading one of the many site books and tracing the next day’s routes on the local footpath maps available for guests to borrow. Why’s it called the Elephant Shed, ask Jen and Larry? Go and stay with them to find out.

Informações de rota

Come from London/Ipswich on the A14 over the Orwell Bridge, past the first exit for Ransomes Europark, then after the Orwell Crossing Truck Stop take the next exit off up the A12, heading for Lowestoft and Woodbridge. At the next roundabout turn right and head for tourist signs for the Newbourne Fox and there is a right-hand turn on a bend (care needed). Follow this road for 1 mile into Newbourne village. At the T-junction turn right onto Mill Road (look to your left and you'll see the Newbourne Fox), then after just over half a mile through the village you will come to Jackson Road, its kick to the right on the first sharp left-hand bend. Don't follow the road as this is the start of Newbourne Road. It's a concrete road and we are down there so follow the signs. If you end up at a hump in the road at the waterworks, turn around and track back to the first right-hand bend and look again for Jackson Road. From Lowestoft you need to come down the A12 and at the junction before you join the A14, turn left for Newbourne and Brightwell and pick up the directions above for heading for the tourist signs for the Newbourne Fox and the right-hand turn on the bend.

Atrações locais

Borrow a map from the Elephant Shed, prepare the pooch for a long day (if you don’t have your own dog, borrow one; this is proper walkies land) and take off into the Suffolk countryside all around for wanders and nature walks. Woodbridge is at the head of the Deben Estuary, so walk from here along the mudflats, marshes and riverbank of the River Deben and keep an eye out for ducks, swans and other watery flutterers. Start at the Newbourne Springs car park (just one mile from the site) and walk through wooded countryside and fields (and past the Maybush Inn and the golf course at Waldringfield) to reach the Newbourne Springs Nature Reserve and the marked trail and several pedestrian trails leading through it: look out here for woodpeckers, nuthatches and treecreepers. Another nature reserve is at Orford Quay 10 or 11 miles from base, a spot where boat people can hop on a tour around Havergate Island to see avocets and marsh harriers. Both North and South beaches at Felixstowe are less than six miles away and the beaches of Essex – Walton, Clacton-on-Sea and Frinton – within about half an hour’s drive. If you’re sticking to Suffolk, Landguard Fort with the Felixstowe Museum and the Victorian promenade with trad beach huts are scenic sights to see before a foraging trip to the quayside at Felixstowe Ferry to find fresh fish for the campfire later. Away from the countryside, the old city of Ipswich is nine or 10 miles west of Woodbridge for shopping, art galleries and a sample of more Suffolk cuisine at the restaurant and farm shop of Jimmy’s Farm.
