What's that rustling in the long grass? At The Wildings Elms Meadow, it could be any number of birds, mammals or insects, as this peaceful site in the quiet East Anglian countryside is passionate about protecting the local area's biodiversity. Plenty of areas around this small-scale site have been left aside for nature, including a wildlife pond with a viewing platform. You're welcome to explore the grounds during your stay here – the little ones may particularly like the wooden playhouse hidden away in the greenery… With spacious and secluded pitches, The Wildings Elms Meadow is a place to escape the hectic pace of everyday life and tune into the rhythms of the natural world, from the dawn chorus in the morning to the crackling of a fire and stargazing at night (firepits are available for hire, and wood can be bought from site staff). Facilities here include a toilet and shower block, a communal kitchen area as well as access to running water and a washing-up area. Dogs are welcome to come and join you here, but they must be kept on leads at all times. Please note that parking is separate from the pitches to protect children and wildlife (wheelbarrows are available for arrivals and departures). The Wildings Elms Meadow is on the edge of the small village of Aldeby. For shops, pubs, restaurants and snacks, you're about three miles from the pretty little town of Beccles (five minutes' drive).

Gostou Perfect! The site is so lovely peaceful & in a great location.
The owners are gorgeous hosts, came to welcome us and checked in throughout our stay.
Toilet and shower facilities are spotlessly clean and the best we've seen at a camping site.
Mini kitchen area was very handy! Fridge is a super great touch!

Cannot complain at all - everything was perfect.

Gostou Had a great stay at The Wildings. What a lovely, laid back campsite while also being really well organised. Having my own private bathroom attached to the camping pod was brilliant.

There was a mains water leak while I was there and the owners went out of the way to solve it quickly without disturbing campers.

Anissa also gave me some fab advice about local paddleboarding spots!

Não gostou This is nobody’s fault but I got quite a lot of mosquito/insect bites at the start of the holiday (this was in September). Wear an insect repellent in the evenings and you will be fine.

Dragonfly cabana

Gostou It's the morning of my departure and I don't want to go! I have just had 5 nights in Dragonfly Shepherd's Hut. The bed is very comfy. I woke to birds, the swishing of trees, a cockerel in the distance. A friendly robin has visited up close each day. There was an influx of loads of dragonflies one day hunting for food. Butterflies and peace. The road is very quiet with sporadic cars and farm vehicles so it's a total escape. The hut is well insulated so not too hot or too cold. You have a large secluded space around the hut. It was relaxing to cook outside on the camping stove provided. There's a wooden shelter to cook in. All the utensils and pans etc are provided. The hut is beautifully decorated. The countryside around here is stunning. I walked on nearby footpaths and saw deer, hares and game birds. At Geldeston lock there is a great pub serving food and real ales. The large garden by the river was a special place to hang out on a summer evening. Anissa, Kevin and their kids were lovely. They aren't intrusive, I only saw them twice and had a good chat with them. That was enough to feel they were approachable with any issues but not so much that you felt you were being intruded on. The site has lovely shrubbery and trees separating pitches so you can create space. I will definitely come again.

Não gostou It would have 10 stars except for the refrigeration situation. A small mini fridge in the hut would be good. Having to go back and forth to the small under counter fridge for the whole campsite to use felt a bit strange given I'm not in a tent. You have your own bathroom though, which is great. The shepherd's hut is also only suitable for one person or a couple. Just what I needed, but families are encouraged to let their kids explore and be kids. So if you are not travelling with children, the free range kid noise can get a bit much. This isn't the fault of the owners of course. And, on the whole, 9pm to 9am quiet time was mostly respected. But I think some families then took that to mean that they didn't have to be considerate of other guests outside these times. In the future, I will come during term time weekdays to avoid this.

Gostou If they cleared this site they could easily have 20 pitches and make way more money. Instead they've only got 5 (standard tent pitches), with large, wild borders between them ensuring privacy and lots of nature. Credit to the owners they've chosen this path and instead created something virtually unique.

The shower and toilet facilities are good, as are washing up facilities, plus there is a nice little kitchen provided with a fridge, microwave, electric kettle plus a variety of honesty shop items you can purchase.

Overall it's a perfect combination of nature with a bit of luxury thrown in.

It's also the first time I've given 10 to any site - even the best sites normally have something they could improve but without being deliberately nitpicky, I can't really think of anything here.

There's lots to do in the local area, starting with the gorgeous Norfolk and Suffolk coast. The pretty seaside resort of Southwold (25 minutes' drive) is a great place to start, while nearby Walberswick (35 minutes) is a top pick for crabbing with the kids. If you're after a wild, natural beach that's great for a walk or picnic, try Covehithe (25 minutes), a mix of sand and shingle. This site is also right on the edge of The Broads National Park, so hire a boat in Beccles (five minutes), try paddleboarding in Wroxham (40 minutes), or bring your binoculars and head off birdwatching at any one of the many nature reserves dotted around the surrounding area. Kids coming away with you will almost certainly appreciate trips to BeWILDerwood Norfolk (40 minutes) in the Broads too – it's got trails, swings and other forest-themed activities that are bound to keep them entertained for hours. Time in town is easily arranged if you feel like a change of scene, whether you're heading to Norwich (35 minutes) for a wander around its castle and cathedral or fancy visiting breweries in Ipswich (an hour) or shopping in Bury St Edmunds (an hour).
