Hikes, wildlife and generous helpings of history are all dished up at The Red Lion, a simple site in the grounds of an old Lincolnshire inn. At a crossroads in the village of East Kirkby, The Red Lion has been refreshing travellers since 1841; more recently, it was a favoured watering hole for the men and women of Bomber Command in World War II, and the pub’s décor pays tribute to them. The staff are steeped in the history of the old coaching inn and the nearby airfield, and can point you towards the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, 10 minutes’ walk down the road and on the site of the former Royal Air Force base. The Red Lion makes a splendid base for aviation and wartime history buffs, with the heritage centre nearby and the displays and memorials of the International Bomber Command Centre a 45-minute drive away. As it’s on the edge on the Lincolnshire Wolds and around half an hour's drive from the coast, it’s also well placed for walks, stately home visits and wildlife watching. Most importantly, it’s at the back of a friendly pub, with free wifi and serving hot food from 6pm to 8pm every evening alongside local beers and other refreshing tipples. Canine companions are welcome in the bar (it’d be nice if they bought a drink…) and on the site.

Gostou: Big H/S pitches, 16amp electric, very quiet when we stayed. friendly and informative staff in the pub, Food was lovely, Dogs allowed in the pub and in 1 part of the restaurant.(we didn't take ours in,I prefer to eat without the dogs at my feet.) Big field next to site to walk the dogs, I did not use facilities as we have a big MH, so I cannot comment on them. Extended our stay to 3 nights, We will definately be back.

Gostou: Brilliant site, clean facilities, WiFi worked in the non electric field. Didn’t go in the pub but we will be back!

Não gostou: Nothing to dislike… even the pavement pizza left outside the toilet block by the group of young lads that stayed Friday night didn’t put us off

Gostou: small site, quiet, good shower block. Staff were friendly and helpful. Had a meal at the pub attached to the site. Good quality food nicely cooked and presented. All necessary information and codes provided in plenty of time before my trip.

Não gostou: Getting out through the barrier. For what ever reason I couldn't trigger the pressure plate with my motorbike to open the automatic barrier. I was lucky that other campers punched the code in on the entry side so I could get out. Would have been a bit of a struggle getting of the bike with all my camping gear, putting the code in, then coming to push my bike through before the barrier dropped. Wouldn't stop me staying again.

Gostou: Lovely little site and very clean could do with more toilets when ca.psite is busy. But apart from that the sire and the staff are nice and friendly.

Gostou: Amazing size pitch. Great facilities. Lovely central park/play area. Food in the pub was amazing, portion sizes were huge. Friendly staff, very helpful. Will definitely return.

Caravana fixa 2 dormitórios (4 pessoas)

Gostou: * LOCATION: The campsite and our "static caravan" were far from the road, and the place was very quiet. The campsite shares a border with the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (which is worth visiting even if you are not into planes). * STAFF: The campsite owner has been extremely helpful. We had a few minor questions, and she replied to our messages instantly. * CLEANINGNESS: The campsite and our static caravan were spotless, and our caravan was as clean as a good hotel. * ORGANISATION: The campsite was very organised. Chains separate the pitches, there is a one-way system for cars, and parking does not affect children's play.

Não gostou: * Weather: it rained quite a lot!

Gostou: As a young family with a young daughter, we really enjoyed our stay. It was peaceful and relaxing as well as having a little park for her to play in.

Não gostou: The families were wet and muddy and quite slippery.

Do gerente: Hi we are sorry you found the facilities wet and muddy and slippery we had been monitoring this and put wet floor signs up at the entrance, with the amount of rain that fell on Sunday this was alittle out of our control we cleaned these facilities as much as possible to mitigate this thanks

Atrações locais

With the chalk hills and sandstone peaks of the Wolds so close, walkers and cyclists are particularly well sorted. A 15-minute drive away, Horncastle is a handy point to join the Viking Way: 147 miles of country trails linking the banks of the Humber with the wetlands around Rutland Water. For a more detailed look at the Wolds, take the Lindsey Trail from Horncastle up to Market Rasen (45 minutes by car), a far-from-flat route of around 80 miles passing through a landscape of ancient woodlands, Neolithic long barrows and fenland views. If the sea’s more your style set course for Skegness, half an hour away, for pier and beach walks, sandcastle building and trips to the Natureland Seal Sanctuary. The same distance away but rather quieter, the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is a wild stretch of coastline crisscrossed with walks and bike trails, visited by skylarks and terns, brent geese and snow bunting. If you’re up for a stately home or two, you can’t get much more stately than the sturdy brick towers of 15th-century Tattershall Castle (15 minutes), while 18th-century Gunby Hall (20 minutes) is sometimes compared to a (very large) dolls’ house.
