How far do you have to go from a city centre to find a place for a relaxing rural stay? In the case of Derbyshire’s Four Oaks Campsite, the answer is not far at all – this six-acre site in the village of Stenson is a mere five miles from Derby. That location makes this a pretty convenient site to travel to (especially if you’re a local looking for a quick breath of fresh air), and once you’re here you’ll be able to leave all thoughts of urban life behind. The surroundings here are all about countryside, canals, rivers and village pubs. The closest pub, in fact, is about five minutes’ walk away – and there are several more within a couple of miles, along with cafés, takeaways and shops. The shops in nearby Willington (five minutes’ drive) are likely to be particularly handy, as the site has a great little outdoor cooking area for guests to use, with a pizza oven and barbecues, plus picnic tables where you can serve up your creations. The level grass pitches also have access to a heated bathroom block (with ladies, gents and accessible facilities), a chemical disposal point and a communal fridge where you can stash your wares until you’re ready to cook. Golf, archery and axe throwing are among the outdoor activities you can try out nearby, and the proximity of both canal and river means there are plenty of options for fishing, launching canoes or just going for a scenic walk. A splendid two-mile walk along the canal brings you to Mercia Marina, where there is a nice assortment of shops, cafés and restaurants.

Gostou Large pitch, and friendly owner. Toilets were kept as clean as they could be. Although we didn’t manage to go due to weather, there is a lovely walk to Mercia marina. Local pub which serves good food is a five minute walk away.

Não gostou As you drive in the first field looks unkempt with waste bins overflowing and some rubbish in the field left from other campers. it was difficult to have a shower or use the toilet without children ‘ playing’ in the shower block unsupervised. The mess of the field when you drive in doesn’t leave the site with a good impression, but if you can overlook this then the you’ll have a pleasant stay.

Gostou Very spacious field in the part we was very much loved everything about this site all the way down to the staff who are so friendly nothing to much they even made a friend for life with our dog.
There potvwash facilities toilet n showers charging station they sell logs and wow we was amazed at thr price n how much u get

Gostou Lovely campsite have been a fair few times

Não gostou Stayed with my sister, these kids came up to us and spoke to us which isn’t an issue but when we were out most of the day we came back to our tent open and our stuff had been moved out water bags poured out and sweets found in our tent. Went into the female toilets and the kids were throwing toilet rolls everywhere.

Gostou The campsite is ran by a lovely family who made us feel very welcome. Toilet and showers cleaned regularly. The website said there is no washing up facility but there is. Local pub within 2 minute walk which was very nice. Good canal walks. Will definitely be booking next year with family

Não gostou There is nothing that we disliked however the toilet block could do with modernizing to make it exceptional.

Gostou Campsite was kept clean .the amenity block was clean with plenty of hot water.Jack and Tom were very helpful and cheerful. All in all we were very happy campers and will definitely be returning.

If your countryside break isn’t complete without a cute farm animal or two, start with an outing to Bluebell Dairy Ice Cream Farm (25 minutes’ drive), where you can meet Highland cows, miniature ponies, pygmy goats and kunekune pigs before sampling something from the range of tempting ice creams. Alternatively, meet the fluffy alpacas and maybe even take some for a walk at Charnwood Forest Alpacas (20 minutes). Walking trails nearby include routes along the banks of the Trent & Mersey Canal and the River Trent. A particularly intriguing route goes via Anchor Church Caves (10 minutes) – a series of natural caves historically used as a worship spot for Christians evading persecution. For a bit more history, head to the 1620s House and Garden at Donington le Heath (half an hour), visit National Trust - Calke Abbey (20 minutes) or check out the vintage aircraft at East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). And if you haven’t explored Derby (20 minutes) yet, it’s worth noting there are some great museums there too, including the Museum of Making and Derby Computer Museum.
