If you’re craving peace and a little luxury on camping holidays in the Croatian countryside, you’ll get both in equal measures at Lodge Holidays at Camping Heart of Nature. This small and cosy site sits on a farm surrounded by forested hills about 10 minutes’ drive from historic Ribnik and its mighty fortress. Although off the well-trodden tourist trail, it’s only an hour and a half's drive from Zagreb, so it’s handy as a weekend escape from the city. Glamping accommodation is in stylish and spacious safari tents laid out with plenty of storage in kitchen corners, living areas and sleeping quarters; outside, each one has a dining table on the covered decking and a leafy private garden with a hammock. Kids can entertain themselves at the playground, where there are climbing frames and a sandpit as well as an area for ball games. The swimming pool is open-air or covered depending on the weather, and there are hiking and cycling trails (you can hire bikes on site) directly from the pitches, with fishing, boating and rafting available on local rivers. When you’re fending for yourselves catering-wise, stock up on cheese, prosciutto and other organic local produce from the site shop. Otherwise, you can make good use of the restaurant, where local dishes are served; it’s open all day for coffees, cold drinks and sweet treats too.

Lokalne atrakcje

The region around the site is something of an undiscovered corner of Croatia, so it's great for hikers, bikers and nature lovers looking to explore the forested hills and fields. As it’s rich in wildlife, keep an eye out for deer, foxes and birds of prey. You might also enjoy canoeing and rafting adventures down rapids on the Mrežnica river (an hour’s drive). You can hike to the viewing deck over the spectacular cascade of waterfalls in UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park (an hour and a half), or see them from a boat trip on Kozjak Lake. For something a bit more high-octane, you can also see the park from above on the zipwire at Zipline Pazi Medo. History buffs could head first to Ribnik Fortress (10 minutes), a medieval stronghold open for visits to its keep, courtyard and chapel. Other stops on a heritage tour may be the impressive baroque-style Ozalj Castle (25 minutes) and gardens standing over the Kupa river, or the Renaissance and baroque buildings of Karlovac (half an hour), on the confluence of four rivers and centred around a star-shaped fortress.
