To call Walnut Grove RV Park convenient is something of an understatement… this Kansas park scores highly on the handy location front on several counts. For starters, there’s easy access from exit 229 on the Interstate 35 (no messing about – usually a bonus for all long-distance drivers) and it’s only half a mile from local shopping and dining should you fancy stretching your legs after you’ve parked up. All sorts of handy facilities (banks, fuel, shops and places to eat) are easily found from this park close to Merriam’s downtown business district; for the more touristy side of your travels it’s a 15-minute drive into the centre of Kansas City. There’s plenty to see and do in and around the city once known as the Paris of the Plains so you’ll need a plan: handily that’s made rather easier by the presence of the park’s community room, which has free internet access and serves free coffee in the mornings to help focus your mind on the important decisions (zoo, steamboat museum or waterpark first?) If you’re in need of snacks too, you can pick those up from the vending machines in the community room; other facilities at the park include chemical disposal, an air-conditioned laundry room and clean bathrooms with hot showers. Travelling hounds are welcome to join you at this dog-friendly park as long as they’re on good behaviour during their stay.

Kansas City’s a place that’s picked up several nicknames over the years: it’s not just been called the ‘Paris of the Plains’ but also the City of Fountains… and no wonder, given that it’s got no fewer than 200 of them scattered around the city (planning to swing by a few is a must on a hot day, surely…) If you require somewhere that you can actually get in the water, head up to the Oceans of Fun waterpark (25 minutes’ drive) for slides, a wave pool and other aquatic antics. Shawnee Town open-air museum (five minutes), The Hallmark Visitors Center (15 minutes) and Kansas City Zoo (20 minutes) are all good options for family days out too. Hoping for a taste of history? Put the Arabia Steamboat Museum, National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame and Harry S Truman Library and Museum on your list. For experiences that are very much in the here and now, grab tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs (football), the Royals (baseball) or the NASCAR Racing Experience. All are within a 25-minute drive.
