Once you’ve visited the castle in Begur, you can also use the town as the start point for a walk on the Camí de Ronda hiking trail, which runs for 43 kilometres along the coast and is a fabulous way to take in some of the seaside scenery. If that’s a bit too much like hard work, you could simply head to one of the local beaches – perhaps popular Platja Fonda (10 minutes’ drive) or the long stretch of sand at Platja del Grau (15 minutes). Keeping the activity levels up, there are more walks and mountain bike trails in the Muntanyes de Begur nature reserve (15 minutes), segway outings from Livetour Segway (10 minutes), horse riding at Hipica Begur (five minutes) and treetop trails at Costa Brava Parc Aventura (10 minutes). Watersports and scuba centres are in good supply nearby too. Big day out? Head off to Girona (55 minutes) to walk the intact city walls and visit the Arab Baths, or take a trip to Barcelona (an hour and a half) for all sorts of cultural, historic and foodie delights.
