Balance an eco-friendly trip with staying on budget at Camping VerdeVeras, a site that’s green by name and green by nature. This place is aimed at both environmentally conscious and money-saving travellers, with handy facilities like a shared kitchen for cooking up eats on the cheap and power coming from solar energy.
The park’s got limited electricity for an off-grid feel (although mains sockets are available to use in the bathrooms and USBs are all around for charging phones and tablets). All water is reused for the plants too and a policy of only using natural toiletries, composting food waste and recycling rubbish adds to the green ethos.
If you want to continue protecting the planet while venturing off into the wilds of Andalusia, decent public transport runs from the town of Vera 20 minutes' walk away (it also has a handful of supermarkets and tapas bars) or you can rent a bike from Camping VerdeVeras to navigate the desert-like region using pedal power.
But where to go…? The sandy beach at Playas de Vera is a 10-minute drive away past the scenic Salar de los Canos wetlands, while a waterpark is 20 minutes away if you fancy slipping down slides and lounging on lazy rivers. And if high-octane thrills are for you, go-karting and horse riding as well as cave tours around the Cuevas del Calguerín (25 minutes’ drive) are also available in the nearby area.
Bringing a pooch? Call up and check there’s space in advance (and keep in mind that four-legged friends always need to be kept on a lead at this park).

After the final roundabout, don’t follow your satnav. Take the ‘via de servicio' exit and turn immediately left at the T-junction. When opposite Andre Valero paint shop on your left, turn right along the sandy track. Go past the farmhouse on your right and take the second right turning (the first is a driveway for the house). The site entrance is then on the right-hand side.

Andalusia’s a stellar spot in Spain for its golden beaches and barren landscape, with the coastline extending down south all the way to the near-deserted coastline of the Cabo de Gata National Park (an hour and a half away) if you’re debating a day trip further afield.
Alternatively, you can stick a touch closer to the site by heading to Tabernas (an hour’s drive) where many a Spaghetti Western was filmed in days past. See the old scenes for yourself at the Mini Hollywood theme park, which includes sets built for the 1965 flick For a Few Dollars More.
Legs feeling the need for some strenuous activity? A touch further on (an hour and 35 minutes) are hikes to hot springs in the Sierra Alhamilla mountains.
