Still in the market for a bit more activity? Set up a battle at Target Lasergame (15 minutes’ drive), take to the treetops at Adventurepark Waddenfun (half an hour), take the nippers to the outdoor play area at Sprookjeshof Zuidlaren (20 minutes) or head out for hikes and bike rides in the Drentsche Aa National Park (25 minutes). Time to calm things down a little bit? Take a stroll around the centre of Groningen (15 minutes) to see the Martini Tower (which you can climb if you insist on packing in more activity), browse the stalls at the Fish Market, wander the Prinsentuin gardens and sip beer at the Martinus Brewery. There are plenty of splendid museums around the area too: head to the Groninger Museum for fab modern architecture and an equally excellent contemporary art collection, or delve into the city’s seafaring past at the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum. A little out of town (25 minutes) is a chance to step into the shoes of the locals at the International Klompenmuseum, which displays clogs both classic and couture.
