When it comes to spectacular scenery, Azienda Agricola Mantenera sure does deliver. Set across a centuries-old olive grove at a slow food project in Basilicata, this touring site has jaw-dropping views of the Lucanian Dolomites. Good food is also on the horizon, as the project produces delicious extra virgin olive oil, and guests can book in at reception for guided tastings through the old trees (with stories of rural traditions to accompany them). Dining experiences are another option if you fancy tucking into dishes made with seasonal local ingredients. The touring pitches at Azienda Agricola Mantenera are completely wild, with no toilets, showers, electricity or water services. In the place of such amenities you get spectacular views (always worth a second and third mention), oodles of peace and, on those lucky nights where there are no clouds, star-studded dark skies. It’s also wild in the sense that guests are asked to pay attention to the wild animals, never uproot the plants or flowers and keep their pitch nice and tidy. The organic farm was founded in 2014 by Andrea Subelli, and over time, it has extended to nearly 10 carefully managed acres. When you finally feel ready to pry yourself away from the excellent on-site views, it should be worth your while to take the 10-minute drive to Tricarico. The medieval town has a cathedral, a Norman tower and shops and restaurants. The famed Angel’s Flight zipwire is a 45-minute drive from the site, as is pretty Pietrapertosa.

One of the most popular activities in the Lucanian Dolomites is not too far away from Azienda Agricola Mantenera. The Angel’s Flight zipwire at Volo dell'Angelo (45 minutes’ drive) will take you soaring out over the Dolomites between Pietrapertosa and Castelmezzano, and it’s possible to get strapped in for the flight solo or as a couple. Of course, Pietrapertosa (45 minutes) is worthy of its own visit, whether you're zipwire-ready or not. Towered over by dramatic mountains, the town has access to the Path of Seven Stones hike through the Dolomiti Lucane, ending in Castelmezzano. If you like dramatic views and wooded trails, pack those hiking boots immediately. That’s not all there is to visit from the site; the scenic city of Matera (55 minutes) and the Sassi di Matera (an hour and five minutes) mountainside cave dwellings sit within day-trip distance. The Slittovia delle Dolomiti Lucane (45 minutes) alpine coaster, set in the sandstone mountains around Castelmezzano, is also on hand for those who are brave enough. Still have more time to fill? Check out the woodlands at Parco Gallipoli Cognato (50 minutes) or the abandoned village of Campomaggiore at La Città dell’Utopia Campomaggiore (40 minutes).
