Let your worries float away with a stay at Camping Le Plantaurel on the banks of the Garonne, across the river from the town of Palaminy in the Haute-Garonne region of the south of France. Plantaurel is five minutes’ drive from the towns of Cazères and Palaminy, where guests can stock up on essentials or have highly tasty eats at one of the many restaurants. Both towns are also top spots for exploring the cultural and historical heritage of the region: walk among the medieval buildings on the streets of the 13th-century fortified town of Palaminy, or pay a visit to the Notre Dame church and treasury and the weekly farmers’ market in Cazères. Once you’ve explored the towns, stay on your feet for a hike through the area surrounding the site: the team at Plantaurel will organise a route for you based on the distance you want to go and the level of difficulty you’re looking for. If you’re seeking something a little more sedate, there’s plenty to do without ever leaving the site. Sit with a rod and reel on the banks of the Garonne, cool off in the outdoor pool, toss a boule in a game of pétanque or keep up your fitness with pilates, yoga or stretching classes under a qualified instructor. And then? After working up an appetite, grab a bite in the on-site bar...

Take your holiday to soaring new heights with a flying lesson at the Aeroclub five minutes’ drive from Camping Le Plantaurel, or plunge below the surface to the prehistoric caves at Mas d’Azil, a 40-minute drive away in the Ariège Pyrenees Regional National Park. For more hair-raising adventures, stick around the national park for whitewater escapades on a raft or kayak, or take to the skies for a birds’ eye view from a paraglider. If you’d prefer to feel solid ground beneath your feet, the park is criss-crossed with waymarked trails you can explore on foot, by bike or on horseback. History buffs will want to make the trip to Toulouse, a 30-minute drive from Plantaurel, for a visit to the Place du Capitole palace and the natural history museum. Budding stargazers should set their sights on Cité de l’espace, where they can learn what it’s like to be an astronaut, see inside a spaceship and get up close with objects from space, all without having to leave planet Earth. Closer to home, call in to Cap Loisirs – an 10-minute drive from the site – where you can try blacklight miniature golf, get futuristic with laser tag, do your best William Tell impression at archery tag, or play it safe on the bowling lanes.
