If you need a mental break and a digital detox, grab an old-fashioned map and plot a course to Yourte Cantal, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Vitrac in the Cantal region of Auvergne. When you arrive, kick back and relax in a forest of Scots pines, miles away from the modern online world – there’s no wifi at Yourte Cantal, so you’re going to have to engage in some self-care, focusing on your own wellbeing and getting back to nature. This is a top spot to use as a base for exploring this part of France – close to lakes, hiking areas and tons of the stunning Plus Beaux Villages de France, the site is central to loads of places you’ll want to explore. Start your hols off with trips to the stunning Auvergne villages near Yourte Cantal: Vitrac is the closest at 10 minutes’ drive away, Laroquebrou is about half an hour from site, and the Plus Beaux Villages de France of Capdenac-le-Haut, Conques and Cardaillac are well worth the hour’s drive. If you need more purpose to your jaunts than just taking in the prettiness, Laroquebrou has a castle to poke around in and is about 10 minutes from Renacland waterpark, or you could scrap the Beaux Villages list entirely and head to the town of Figeac for shops, restaurants and museums (the Place des Ecritures is a must) or the ancient spa town of Vic-sur-Cère. Stepping away from the urban, continue the taste of relaxation you got at Vic-sur-Cère with a stop at Côté Jardin for its spa and flotation tank, get up close with the local wildlife at La Vallée des Daims, or venture to Saint-Étienne-Cantalès dam for swimming and watersports. If dams aren’t your thing, you can go swimming a little closer to home base instead, at the public swimming pool 15 minutes from Yourte Cantal.
