Start your explorations in your closest settlement, Riddells Creek – it’s well known for the geese that live on the village lake. On the edge of the village, Conglomerate Gully (10 minutes’ drive) has one of the best dry eucalypt forest walks around, with a trail of an hour or so taking you through the woods and grasslands and past a stream (it’s particularly fine in spring, when native orchids burst into life). For more walking trails and climbing spots, head to the volcanic formations of Hanging Rock (15 minutes) or out into Macedon Regional Park (25 minutes) for several multipurpose trails. The area has plenty of wineries where you can reward yourself with a well-earned glass after you’ve completed your walk (or pick up a bottle for back at your pitch).
