Peace in Perthshire, with views of the Cairngorms? Come along to Dall Cottage Camping. The sensible folk here have set up their small site to stay as close to nature as possible, keeping the vibe as semi-wild camping in a rural wildlife haven. The site is next to the River Garry over a river ford crossing and is only accessible to walkers, cyclists and 4x4 vehicles, which means a definite remote feel as well as plenty of space… (parking and a lift in a 4x4 are available for those travelling in normal cars). And for your adventures off site? This is a stunning setting for outdoor days: on the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park (Britain’s biggest, fact fans), a short drive from three lochs and just north of Tay Forest Park. There’s easy access to towns and cities too: Pitlochry is 20 minutes’ drive away, the Fair Trade shopping of Aberfeldy within 40, and Perth just over an hour. Blair Atholl, home to the Atholl Country Life Museum and Blair Castle, is 15 minutes from the site. Wild camping of any flavour most certainly needs fire, and the Dall Cottage team turn up trumps here too, providing firepits for guests’ use so that eats, drinks and stargazing can be done alongside toasty flames. Amenities are well thought out too: there’s a hot shower, clean and well-equipped compost toilet. Please note that only four wheel drive vehicles can be parked next to the pitch; other cars will need to be parked on the other side of the river (transport can be provided across the river on arrival and departure, but please provide the team with a time in advance).

  • Access to the site is through a river across a rough un-surfaced ford, so is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles with good ground clearance. Campers on foot, bike, or trail-type motorbikes can also cross, but with caution and by experienced riders. Most of the time the river is low, allowing for crossing, however, on occasion the river can rise quickly after heavy rainand be un-passable, please be aware of this. If you're travelling in a normal car, you'll need to park on the other side of the river and use the site's 4x4 to transport your gear (please arrange this in advance).

Likte: This was a beautiful stay. I felt perfectly safe as a solo female traveler and communication was very easy- I just texted a time when I needed picked up to cross the river and they appeared.
The couple were so friendly and the grounds are very quiet- places to swim and walk are bountiful. It is also in a sheltered valley so the it wasn't very windy. Loved the fire pit and watching the stars come out at night.

Likte: As 4x4 owners, this site is almost a dream find. The access road is mostly gravel until you reach the river crossing. This is where normal cars will have to be left and a taxi ride sought from the site owners (more than willing to accommodate)
If you have a vehicle capable of the river crossing, you traverse the river and are welcomed by incredibly friendly owners and a site so perfectly located you'd be hard pressed to make it better.
Loo's, shower and a small honesty shop pretty much cover the facilities. Please remember this is an almost "wild" campsite, so the loo's and shower whilst absolutely functional and clean, are not "hotel" like.
Each pitch has its own firepit (logs available from the honesty shop) At the time of our visit the cost was £15 for two baskets of logs, kindling and firelighting equipment which was plenty for us for the night.
We were all sad to leave and all stated we would return again soon

Likte: Just off the A9 so great for day trips / hiking days but feels v remote as you have to cross a river in wellies to get on site (or in a 4x4). Feels like wild camping with the benefit of a compost toilet and gas shower!
Our plot had trees for a hammock and a small area by the river for fishing.
Love the fire pits & shop with drinking water & wood.
Easy communication with hosts for lifts across the river for taking all our camping stuff over at the beginning and end of the trip!
Would 100% recommend for a semi- wild camp trip!

Likte: We just returned from our stay at Dall Cottage, and would highly recommend it!
It gives the feel of wild camping, but you get to have a hot shower and compost toilet, which is ideal.
All the pichups are by the river, and each has their own bonfire.

To get there you need to cross a shallow river, but the owners will come with their 4x4 to take you across. It is walkable, but you'll need wellies and to take it slowly as its a bit slippy. We manages just fine.

There is also a little honesty shop where you can buy wood and kindling, mosquito repellants, soft drinks and marshmallow toasting kits.

The owner were absolutly lovely, and we'll look forward to staying there again in the future!

Likte: I visited here for a night with my 7 year old son and will definitely return. We both loved it, it gave him a real sense of adventure, walking along by the river, crossing the Ford and the fire pit. The remote feeling is what a lot of people need these days to get away from technology. Gives the wild camping feel with the convenience of a toilet and shower, also the honesty shop had some handy things although I didn’t need to use it. One night stay but memories for life. Big 👍 from us.

Likte: Beautiful place, beautiful views, many paths to walk. Small shop very practical, toilets clean and fragrant. The owners are very helpful and their sons are role models.

Likte ikke: The only thing that was a bit bothersome were the trains that ran every few dozen minutes not far from the tent and the noise of the expressway. Most severe at night. I think this information should be in the description of the place.

Likte: We enjoyed an amazing 4 night stay here whilst visiting Blair Horse trials, it was mine & my daughters first ever time camping and we couldn't have chosen a better place, the site is immaculate Tabitha & her family are so welcoming everything has been so well thought out, lovely hot shower & clean facilities, a great little shop to buy logs for the fire pit & other little treats. The location is stunning we could not have asked for anything more.

From the south, stay on the A9 until you see the turnoff signposted Dalnamein to the left. Take the turning and almost straight in front of you you'll see two metal farm gates. Go through the gates (please do close all gates behind you) down the track and park on the right just before the river. Please text in good time prior to your arrival should you need assistance with crossing the river. From the north, look out for the Dalnamein sign to your right 1 mile after the dual carriageway and follow as above.

Lokale attraksjoner

Local village Blair Atholl is a pretty place to start wanderings off at, for a stroll around the extensive gardens of 13th-century Blair Castle… followed by fish and chips at the town’s acclaimed takeaway. Scottish tweed, other clothing and gifts are all sourceable at the House of Bruar. The Pitlochry fish ladder is a local destination to take your camera along to: this famed fishway has 34 pools in total, including one with an underwater viewing area and CCTV for easy viewing. In town, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre has performances and festivals throughout the year, or if you’re feeling energetic you can strike out on the long-distance Rob Roy Way which runs for 79 miles from Pitlochy to Drymen in Stirling. More walking paths and mountain biking routes are close by, along with walks by Loch Rammel, Loch Errochty and Loch Tummel all within 25 minutes’ drive. More placid options include the zoo and safari park of the Highland Wildlife Park (45 minutes’ drive), Aviemore (55 minutes), Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (also 55 minutes) and Scone Palace (an hour and five minutes). Further afield, get along to Dundee or St Andrews (an hour and 25 minutes and an hour and 45 minutes away respectively), for several castles and Firth of Tay views at the former and some of the most famed golf in the world at the latter.
