Well, this really is getting away from it all. With peaty moorland and coastal views near Borve on the Isle of Lewis, Galson Campsite is a place that offers sturdy and spacious hardstanding pitches for motorhomes and caravans, all with a 240v electric hook-up. Close to the pitches there’s a fully accessible amenities block with a hot shower, toilet, waste disposal and dishwashing facilities. Also on site is the Galson Trust Business Centre, where you can pick up all sorts of handy things including tourist information, hints for dining out and know-how on upcoming local events. Set on the handy A857 coast road on the Atlantic side of the island, the site is within five minutes’ drive of restaurants and an inn, and there are convenience stores and a petrol station within 10 minutes by car. Nearby Spòrsnis Community Centre (15 minutes’ drive) is a handy place to know about… it's got ten-pin bowling, a soft-play area and a multi-sports hall to keep everybody entertained if the weather isn’t cooperating.

Likte: Hard standing pitch for only a few vehicles, pitches were well spaced out. Amenities are simple and clean with a small kitchen area and showers and toilets, all in good working order and good quality. Situated near to good costal walks, beaches and Butt of Lewis lighthouse. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Likte: Toller Womo Stellplatz zum Erkunden der Insel. Liegt etwas abseits der Straße hinter einer kleinen Firma. Der Platz verfügt über 4 Parzellen mit Strom. Er ist sehr gepflegt, liegt ruhig und zentral, die sanitären Anlagen sind tiptop. Wir hatten 4 Nächte gebucht und konnten somit von dort aus unsere Besichtigungen bzw. Wanderungen anfahren und abends wieder an den Platz zurück fahren. Da die Insel nicht so groß ist, ist das gut zu machen. Zum richtig ‘Campen’ ist der Platz eher ungeeignet.

Likte ikke: Bei Vollbelegung des Platzes verfügt der Platz nur über 1 Dusche. Was einfach zu wenig ist. Leider kommt das Wasser nur sehr sparsam und mäßig warm. Haare waschen ist da sehr schwierig.

Likte: Everything. Clean, easy to get to and use facilities. Very peaceful.

Likte ikke: Nothing the site was amazing. To pre-warn future travellers though, isle of Lewis is a bit windy so cooking out doors might be a problem. There was also no WiFi but isle of Lewis had the best internet connection so no loss for me

Likte: Clean and new generous pitch size. All 5 pitches close to service block.

Likte ikke: What limited facilities there are, they are first class, new and very clean. However the down side for us was that these facilities are open to the public. This is not an enclosed site. No warden 24/7. If you are an older couple like us there was no sense of security or of help after hours should you need it. With only one shower, when a car drove up and 3 people showered one at a time, the wait time for the shower was nearly 90 minutes. Last point, on arrival we called the out of hours number with a query and gave our details but no call back received.

Likte: Toilet and showering facilities were clean and modern. Best we have been to. No hassles in booking and setting up 15 mins from the lovely Eoropie beach and 30-40 minutes from Stornoway.

Likte ikke: Not much not to like. More showers would be good although you can use the facilities in the adjacent business centre too.

Likte: Nice quiet location, and advertised with showers and toilet facility.

Likte ikke: There is only 1 shower in the disabled toilet, and a sticker on the shower saying don't use on high setting. The shower has low water flow, and low temperature. Unuseable, and if we had known we would not have booked. The annoying point is we dropped the site an email to advise, and they said it was the first they knew and it must be low water presure. It was not low water pressure as we pointed out as the taps work fine. What was dissapointing is that looking at the reviews, they did know about the issue as a reviewer advised them 2 months earlier, and that it was not water pressure also! Make your own mind up if you want to stay and pay £30 for no shower!

Likte: Great bathroom facilities and EHU on a basic site. Great spot for sunset and travel onwards to the lighthouse and north Lewis. Washing line is round the far side of the toilet block to dry towels.

Likte ikke: Pitches are allocated but no email or text and no one on site to see when arriving. No bother really, apart from a slightly perplexed Dutch man and his family who had a MH pitch allocated… we didn’t have any instructions about it so had parked up in his spot. All fine between us but very different information emailed out post booking through the different websites we had both booked through.

Lokale attraksjoner

The site is close to numerous beaches, including the sheltered and sandy Port Stoth beach – the island’s most northerly, where you can sometimes glimpse seals basking, and next to a pretty harbour and a few cafés. Eoropie Beach (both 15 minutes’ drive) is a popular spot for surfing, while Garry Beach (50 minutes’ drive), on the east side of the island, is known for its dramatic rock formations. To learn about the ancient heritage of Lewis, head for Calanais Standing Stones (45 minutes), standing proud over Loch Roag for thousands of years. The adjacent Visitor Centre has lots of information and exhibitions on the megalithic stones. Visit the Dun Carloway Broch (40 minutes) to see the ruins of an Iron Age castle, and have a look at a traditional Lewis home at the restored Gearrannan Blackhouse Village (40 minutes). If you’re travelling with kids, a trip to Eoropie Dunes Park (15 minutes) involves zipwires, a cycling path and skateboard park as well as a maze and adventure trail.
