A round of golf, a walk in the woods, a night of stargazing; all mighty pleasing holiday activities and all within extremely easy reach for guests at Conifer Lodges. Such easy reach in fact that you need only travel a few steps from your abode to get going on any of them. On the outskirts of the little market town of Newton Stewart, the site is flanked on one side by the Galloway Forest Park, with the 18-hole course of Newton Stewart Golf club on t’other side. As for those stars, on a clear night you need only step out on to your deck (perhaps clutching a glass of the good stuff), sit back and look upwards. This is a particularly fine place to be of an evening, as you’re on the edge of one of the UK’s handful of Dark Sky Parks, meaning that, should the clouds decree it, you’ll be treated to dazzling displays overhead. Each of the lodges has a spacious open-plan lounge, dining room and fully-equipped kitchen. There’s outdoor furniture on your deck for warmer days; if the weather turns you can cosy up indoors on the sofas to use the TV, DVD player or iPod dock. There’s also free wifi access if you’d like to keep tabs on the outside world. If you fancy whacking a few balls around, pack your racquets to use the site’s tennis court or bring your golf clubs and ask about special rates at the neighbouring course. The playground beckons for younger kids, while fishing and nature walks are nearby for those who yearn for a bit of peace and quiet. Meals can be cooked either in your lodge or on a barbecue – there’s a supermarket five minutes’ drive away for stocking up on all the necessaries. Alternatively, take the 20-minute walk into town to eat at one of the cosy pubs or restaurants that line the River Cree. Whether you’re eating in or out, meat-eaters are heartily advised to try out the famed local Galloway beef.

Lokale attraksjoner

Numerous walking trails wind their way through the Galloway Forest Park; some trails are accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs; ask at a visitor centre for a map with details. Keep your eyes open for red squirrels and roe deer as you walk through mixed woodland to streams, abandoned tin mines and other points of interest. A popular route is the steep climb up to Murray's Monument, seven miles away, to survey the countryside from up above. If you’d like a spot where you’re almost guaranteed to see some wildlife, take the 15-minute drive up to the Wild Goat Park and neighbouring Red Deer Range, where the animals congregate and can be seen from the viewing area and hides. Cyclists have a choice of graded trails as well, from family-friendly flat paths to the Big Country Ride, a testing 58-kilometre route along forest trails and quiet public roads. Mountain bikers in search of a thrill should tackle one of the courses at Kirroughtree. For an altogether more calming time, take your fishing rod along to Palnure Burn, 20 minutes away (enquire about special deals for guests before you leave). In town, pop into the small Newton Stewart Museum, which is packed with various local bits and bobs from across the ages: tools, kitchen kit, clothes and loads more. Learn about history from a more aristocratic angle at Cardoness Castle, 20 minutes away – wander around the 15th-century tower house before imagining life in the pit prison down below.
