First stop on your Wiltshire adventure will perhaps be a wander around the cottages built of honey-coloured stone in Castle Combe (20 minutes’ walk), location of scenes from films like ‘Warhorse’ and ‘Dr Doolittle’. If dates coincide, you can watch the car races at Castle Combe Circuit (10 minutes), and there’s an 18-hole golf course (20 minutes) in the village as well. The Georgian-era National Trust village of Lacock (15 minutes’ drive) is another well-known film location; Harry Potter scenes were shot at the 13th-century abbey, which is open for tours of its cloisters, grounds and museum of photography. There are artisan shops and a couple of traditional pubs to check out in Lacock itself as well. Bradford-on-Avon (half an hour) is another upmarket shopping spot with leafy walks along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Other possible day trips include elegant Bath (40 minutes), where you can explore the ancient Roman baths and then enjoy a thoroughly 21st-century spa experience at Thermae Bath Spa.
