Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open Friday to Sunday) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

Likte ikke: Reeds in lake need cutting down and before staying we did not realise the cafe was only open at the weekend. But perfect apart from that !

Likte: Really nice area, friendly staff, so close to the beach and a nice short walk away from a pub! Amazing stay, facilities were clean and really accessible as well.

Likte ikke: No onsite WiFi and very poor phone signal (not a massive issue though!)

Likte: Absolutely lovely place peaceful and very relaxing. The lake was amazing. Didn’t venture in for a swim but enjoyed watching the youngsters use their body boards. Highly recommend it for its quiet location. Only slight down side there was no WiFi available

Likte ikke: Lights in the toilets didn’t work, so needed a torch to have a wee and brush your teeth. Hand drying paper towel ran out on not replaced Limited hot water for washing up

Likte: Litton is a lovely peaceful area, with a lovely lake to enjoy it was a pity the weather wasn't on our side this time.

Likte ikke: a couple of pitches with electric available would be a bonus, as weather meant our torches/phones were used more for light etc

Likte: Great campsite. Nice walk to the beach. Also on a national cycle route. Lovely pub 5 mins walk, (Which is open every day, including food). Lake is great for paddle boarding. Can't comment on the cafe as only opened Fri/Sat/Sun.

Likte: This site is perfect for switching off! No electricity, no phone signal no worries! We were a bit daft and followed the sat nav in whilst towing a small caravan and it was a bit scary! We made it safe and sound in the end and figured out a much safer less scary way home thanks to the staff at the site. We met the site owner, manager and other staff over the three nights we were there and every single one of them were friendly and nice. They genuinely did everything they could to help us out including allowing us to pitch up right next to the toilet block which really helps if you happen to be a lady of a certain age (if you know, you know!). The toilets were basic portable shower/toilet units but they were well stocked and kept clean and tidy. As others have mentioned there are only two showers and three toilets for the whole site but two staff members told us that they were getting more which will hugely improve the site. The pitches were level and considering the huge amount of rain we had pretty well drained. The lake was wonderful with plenty of benches and two resident friendly geese who pottered around. I think that some people mistook the goose poo for dog poo, unfortunately geese are notoriously hard to toilet train but luckily their poo doesn't smell much! We spent hours (in the rain) paddle boarding and in the dingy on the lake which was lovely. The real bonus was the fire pit in the evenings and the lack of light pollution! We did take our very basic telescope for a bit of star gazing. We left the site to go and get fish and chips by the sea which was about 15 minutes down the road and other than that we stayed on site and enjoyed it!

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
