What tempts you towards north Devon? Coast walks, surf hotspots, sandy beaches and boat trips perhaps? Or maybe tackling the Tarka Trail for walks and bike rides on a traffic-free rural route? Maybe the various family attractions – like Exmoor Zoo and The BIG Sheep – feature on the list too? Any and all of these can be easily found in the area around Plaistow Mills, a four-acre field next to the B3230 between Barnstaple and Ilfracombe. Pitches here cater for guests aged 12 and over, and they’re part of a trout farm that supplies fresh and smoked fish to restaurants and pubs across north Devon. If you fancy trying some out, head to the site’s farm shop, which stocks it alongside various local meats, veg and fresh eggs. That farm shop means that it’s easy to source bits for your barbecue, but there are excellent options on hand if you fancy eating out: both the Muddiford Inn gastropub and the smart restaurant at Broomhill Estate are a short walk away along footpaths from the site. Barnstaple (10 minutes' drive) has more shops for any other bits you may need. If you need to work up an appetite there are plenty more footpaths in the local networks, including a forest bridleway right by the site and paths stretching out to the coast or inland to Exmoor National Park. As the name suggests, this site was once a flour mill – and you’ll see that clearly when you head to the toilets, which have been installed in the old mill buildings. Some of the old workings are still visible here in the atmospheric old stone building.
