Working livestock farm with sheep, cows and free-range poultry

Longing to relax with some rural scenery? At the foot of the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve in the South Downs National Park, the bell tent at Ashford Farm has a rather generous helping – and yet, Portsmouth (on the coast) and cities such as Chichester and Winchester are around half an hour’s drive away too. Map out your way to the prime local vistas… first, the nature reserve is 45 minutes’ walk away for walks up in the woods and views from Poet’s Stone (commemorating the war poet Edward Thomas). Then, the 50-mile Shipwrights Way (half an hour’s walk) leads the way to many more countryside views. As part of a working livestock farm, among your neighbours (depending on the time of year) are cattle, sheep, pigs, free-range turkeys, geese, ducks and chickens. With woodlands to the north and west, and the farm down below, the bell tent is a scenic spot to settle down for a while. Your bell tent handily has its very own firepit; an initial supply of logs is provided, and more logs are for sale should you need extra. It's also possible to get your mitts on frozen sausages, bacon and fresh eggs from the farm. The bell tent has access to an amenities block with a toilet and shower, which is shared with a long-term resident on the farm, and there's also a washing-up area, a microwave and a kettle in the farmyard (hot brew, please). On the outskirts of Steep village and five minutes’ drive away from Petersfield, a market town, the bell tent is handily within easy reach of tasty local food. It can be tracked down at the two pubs in Steep (half an hour’s walk) or at another two pubs within walking distance. Supermarkets and other eateries are in Petersfield, 10 minutes’ drive away.
