Fancy going back to the wild – but still having the reassuring presence of a town (and all its amenities) nearby? Then Sugar Creek Camp might be the place for you. Immersed in a wooded area, this small, family-friendly site with a creek running through it feels remote and secluded; however, it is located a 10-minute drive from the town of Vestal and a 15-minute drive from the city of Binghamton, Broome County, NY. You can hang a hammock from the trees and do nothing but listen to the breeze shaking the leaves; if you feel more active, you can explore the local area with your canine companion, maybe keeping track of the wildlife you might spot on your wanderings. There are forested trails nearby in Jones Park (10 minutes' drive) or, if you want to crank it up a notch, you can hike to the top of an old ski slope at the Aqua-Terra Wilderness Area (10 minutes), where there’s also a fishing pond. Or perhaps you’d like to canoe or kayak along the Susquehanna River – Confluence Park (10 minutes) in Binghamton is a popular launching spot for vessels. From here, a trail skirting the Chenango River links to the Cheri A Lindsey Memorial Park, which has a swimming pool. Back on site, there should be plenty of firewood for your barbecue. There is a portable toilet for guests; however, please note that the site has no running, drinkable or hot water, so make sure you plan accordingly.

Binghamton University Nature Preserve (five minutes’ drive) spreads over 190 acres of land south of the campus and is crossed by a number of trails, including seasonal routes popular with cross-country skiers. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, beavers and coyotes, plus herons and kingfishers in the wetlands. If you prefer your animals domesticated and huggable, head to Edwards Petting Farm (five minutes), where you can get up close and personal with rabbits, goats and pigs, or go on a pony ride. The owners of this working farm will personally give you a guided tour of the premises and introduce you to their livestock. Budding astronomers might appreciate a trip to Kopernik Observatory Science (10 minutes), a hilltop facility running regular sessions with themed presentations and guided tours, not to mention (of course) the chance to look at the night sky through their three powerful telescopes.
