When you’re after peaceful countryside, but with the option of plenty of outdoor stuff to do, take a good look at Robinson’s Cottages, set amid woodland on the banks of the Dennys River in Down East Maine. This is a small family-run business that began life in 1920, on land owned since the 1860s by many generations of the Robinson family. There are numerous walks through the forest, and you have direct access to the multiuse Sunrise Trail between mile markers 79 and 80. Even before you consider leaving the campsite, you have use of a wild swimming beach and fishing spots along the river, as well as rowing boats, kayaks and canoes (life jackets are kept outside the office) to use for free. Kids can keep themselves busy with swings, horseshoes and badminton/volleyball nets at the play area, and there’s a large library of DVDs for you to borrow (bring something on which to watch them though) when you all require some quiet downtime after all that alfresco activity.   Firewood is provided for woodfired stoves and firepits, and water bottles can be filled at the site office in the main house. And yes, this may be a rural area, but there are shops and restaurants in several towns within half an hour’s drive.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

As well as all the outdoor fun to be had at the campsite, you can follow the Sunrise Trail directly from Robinson’s Cottages on foot, by bike or on horseback. There are way-marked trails through riverine ecosystems at Cobscook Shores (25 minutes’ drive), and kingfishers or eagles to spot amid the watery landscapes of Sipp Bay Preserve (15 minutes). More wildlife adventures for summer visitors could include whale-watching boat trips from Eastport and Lubec, or cruises to see the puffin colonies on Machias Seal Island from Cutler Harbor (40 minutes). If you’d like to learn a little colonial history, head for the interpretive trail and ranger talks at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site (half an hour). And of course, Maine is famed for its magnificent displays of autumn foliage; peak times for viewing the swathes of gold and burnt umber are the first two weeks of October, but a visit any time in September is pretty impressive too.
