The Camping Valderredible team reckons its region of Polientes is one of the most spectacular areas in northern Spain – care to see if they're right?
Spoiler alert: it's all pretty impressive around here. Polientes is in the Cantabrian community of Valderredible, a place of valleys, the Ebro river and its traditional bankside villages, ancient monuments and cave hermitages, Roman heritage, waterfalls and fine old forests.
Star seekers have the Astronomical Observatory of Cantabria just ten minutes from the campsite, while the heavenly hikes of the Camino de Santiago are easily reachable to follow one of Europe's major Middle Ages pilgrimage routes.
Among all all this, you might like to know there are some relaxing options on site... Camping Valderredible has a play area to sort the kids, an outdoor seasonal pool with slides, and free wifi to figure out where in northern Spain you might want to venture next. The modern toilet blocks come with free hot water for showers as well as a washing-up area.
There's also a site restaurant, just the place to meet fellow guests over a good dinner and a glass of wine, for a bit of competition as to who's seen the best of this bit of Spain.

From Santander on the A-67 take Exit 122 onto the N-611 and continue towards the CA-272. Follow the signposts to Barrio Polientes.

They do reckon it's an immensely good area of northern Spain… Camping Valderredible is in an area of hiking, outdoor sports, spectacular scenery and ancient heritage, all easily reachable from the site. Outdoor activities like rafting, canyoning, canoeing, bungee jumping and climbing are available nearby.
Prehistoric caves and menhirs are among the ancient sights to see in the region, along with Romanesque and cave churches like the Collegiate Church of San Martin and the eighth century Cave church of Santa Maria de Valverde, next to a medieval cemetery. The Cave of Altamira near Santillana del Mar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its Upper Paleolithic cave paintings.
Within half an hour are scenic highlights like forest and waterfall hikes around Mount Hijedo, the biggest wooded area in northern Spain and the second biggest in the country; and the 50 or so kilometres of paths along the Ebro river.
If you prefer more formal trails to tramp along, try the Cantabrian stretch of the 1,280km GR-99, which joins up on part of its route with the old section of the Camino de Santiago.
The Astronomical Observatory of Cantabria is ten minutes' drive away.
