Swallowtail Country Estate is an Eastern Cape site in the village of Hogsback, just off the R345. It’s not just the roadside location that makes this a handy spot: guests staying here will also be within easy walking distance of food shops, restaurants and hiking trails in the surrounding Hogsback State Forest. It’s certainly worth bringing your walking shoes along for a stay here as you can set out on some very fine trails to take in waterfalls, indigenous forest, spectacular mountain views and all sorts of native wildlife (including birds and butterflies up in the air and mushrooms down at ground level). Not that the views and the nature-filled vibe have to stop when you get back from your walk: this site high up in the Amatola mountains has splendid views out over the ‘Hogs’ that give the area its name, and plenty of space from which to soak up all those vistas. There are lots of gorgeous flowers and plants to admire as you wander around the grounds (and also a wooden jungle gym and swing set for nippers who may not be so enthused by such things…) The pitches here are all on soft grass with partial shade, but most would agree that the finest place to kick back for a good view is on the lounge deck with sundowner in hand (the site doesn’t sell alcohol but guests are welcome to bring their own drinks along). The deck is part of Trekker’s Lounge indoor braai and entertainment facility, which all guests are free to use: it’s got a big braai area, a pool table, a dartboard, a guest fridge and a washing-up area.
