Many of the Durmitor paths accessible from the site are free to follow without paying the entrance fee to the national park; if you want advice on where to walk, staff members at reception will be happy to help. Families can start with a short stroll through forest to the glacial lake at Crno Jezero (an hour’s walk), while experienced hikers can follow more demanding mountain routes up to six hours in duration. Best seen in spring following snow melt, the Vodopad Čeline waterfall (15 minutes’ drive) tumbles in dramatic steps down the hillside, and there are more daring riverine adventures to be had rafting through the turquoise waters of the spectacular Tara River Canyon (50 minutes). For stunning views across the gorge, head for the viewpoint at Vidikovac Kanjon Tare (half an hour). If you’re visiting in winter, hire your gear at Savin Kuk Ski Centre (10 minutes) and go gliding down the slopes – it’s got several blue runs just right for kids learning to ski. Summer visitors will find the resort doubling as a hiking area with stunning views over craggy limestone peaks.
