With pitches shaded by tall trees, and direct access to the sandy beaches of the north-western Adriatic Sea, Centro Vacanze San Francesco is a top spot for a family break. The facilities at this holiday village in Duna Verde, just outside the coastal town of Caorle (10 minutes’ drive), are so extensive that you might end up seeing your children only at meal times. The rest of the time, your offspring will be busy taking part in organised activities at the kids’ club (or the teens’ club), making new friends in the playground, the games room or the ping-pong tables, or using the waterslides at the on-site pools. Grown-ups have no need to feel left out, as they explore sports facilities that range from tennis to volleyball, via guided fitness sessions. On particularly hot days, you might be after something a little more sedate – maybe a game of pétanque or a bike ride (cycle hire is available on site) along the path that stretches from Eraclea Mare (13 minutes by bike) via Duna Verde to Caorle (half an hour by bike). Then there’s swimming and watersports at the beach, or horse riding at nearby equestrian centres (of which there are several within a half-hour drive). The site has three restaurants serving pizza, seafood dishes and grilled meats, plus a gelateria and a bar for your late afternoon spritz. There’s also a well-stocked supermarket and a store selling lilos, swim floats, and buckets and spades for your child’s castle-building needs.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

In San Donà di Piave (25 minutes’ drive), the MUB - Museo della Bonifica explores the history of the local landscape with archaeological artefacts and displays on land reclamation, plus sections on the two World Wars. On select summer evenings, the museum becomes the setting for concerts and theatre performances. A protected nature area between the Adriatic Sea and the lagoon, Oasi Vallevecchia di Brussa (45 minutes) has sand dunes, agricultural fields and pine tree-shaded trails that provide a home for hares, roe deer and herons. Drive to Punta Sabbioni (45 minutes) and from there catch a ferry to Venice (about 10 minutes). Brave the crowds in St Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge, or walk along less busy narrow alleys lined with canals and splendid buildings. Alternatively, head to Burano, with its pastel-coloured fishermen’s cottages, or Murano to visit its famed glassworks.
