Embrace the typical landscape of Sicily – all olive trees, lemon groves and succulent plants – at Agave (possibly named after the distinctive spiky plants that line the site’s driveway and pitches). This family-friendly site is 50 minutes’ drive from Sicily’s capital Palermo, and really convenient for visitors who are flying to the island, since it is a straightforward 15-minute drive from Punta Raisi Airport. While Agave is rather vast (a whopping 6,000 square metre), there are blissfully few pitches here, which makes your stay feel secluded and peaceful. And while there are mountains all around (including the Montagna Longa peak, with hiking trails and spectacular views of Sicily’s north-western coast), the grounds are completely flat. They are also safe, enclosed by high walls and accessed via a rather forbidding entrance gate. There are a handful of useful amenities on this dog-friendly site, including a toilet/shower block (with wheelchair-accessible facilities, plus a spacious outdoor shower), a communal fridge and espresso machine, and picnic tables. A freshwater well feeds a 10,000-litre cistern, ensuring a reliable water supply. You’re welcome to light up a barbecue here, and supplies can be sourced in the nearby town of Carini (five minutes’ drive), which also has several pizzerias and restaurants serving traditional Sicilian specialities. Carini Beach is 10 minutes’ drive away, or you can head to west-facing Magaggiari Beach for sunset watching – and aeroplane spotting: the beach is virtually at the end of the airport runway.

Op deze camping zijn hondenrassen/kruisingen die in de 'lijst met hoog-risico honden op agressief gedrag' zijn opgenomen, niet toegestaan (zoals de pitbullterriër, tosa, Argentijnse dog en fila brasileiro). Ook de volgende rassen zijn niet welkom: de staffordshire-bulterriër, Amerikaanse staffordshireterriër, rottweiler en mastiff.

After visiting the Villagrazia di Carini Catacomb (five minutes’ drive), with its brightly frescoed walls, continue towards the coast for another couple of minutes to the Bioparco di Sicilia. As well as exotic plants such as birds of paradise and frangipani, there is a zoological garden populated by capybaras, wallabies and lemurs. Borgo Parrini Case Museo ‘I CAMPANILI A BORGO PARRINI’ (25 minutes) is a pretty hamlet whose houses have been painted with vibrantly coloured scenes, decorated with mosaics or ceramic tiles, or inscribed with verses. Stop at the bar on the square for a drink, then head to the San Cataldo Terrasini Beach (a further five minutes) for a dip in the sea. In Palermo (50 minutes), check out the Palazzo dei Normanni, where the splendid Palatine Chapel is covered in gilded mosaics. The Cathedral, which has Norman, Moorish and Neoclassical elements, houses the tombs of the kings and queens of Sicily, while the Church of Saint John of the Hermits is topped by distinctive red domes.
