Looking for somewhere cool, calm and convenient to park your campervan or caravan for a few days in the gorgeous Puglia countryside? Posta del Viandante may well fit the bill – this quiet little touring site is set in an olive grove between Bitonto and Palombaio, about half an hour’s drive from Bari. The pitches here are simple in style and well suited to those looking for a chilled-out place to stay. They’re flat, shaded by the olive trees (around 80 or so of them) and set within a fully fenced site for safety and security. You’ll need to be self-sufficient to stay here, as there are no toilets, showers or drinking water supplies, but the trade-off is a wonderfully peaceful spot with very little to distract you from the important task of slowing down for a while. Dogs and kids are welcome at this site, and there’s scope to set up an awning or gazebo for a bit of extra space and shade if you need it. There are a couple of places to eat in Palombaio (five minutes' drive), with more options in Bitonto (10 minutes) but you may well prefer to make the most of your alfresco time by cooking something up at the site’s barbecue area. What you do while you’re staying here is up to you – put your feet up and enjoy the peace or use the place as a base for activities and visits to local attractions. The area is packed with historic sights, lovely rural walks, vineyards and traditional villages… and it’s only about half an hour’s drive to the coast as well.

Honden

  • Op deze camping zijn hondenrassen/kruisingen die in de 'lijst met hoog-risico honden op agressief gedrag' zijn opgenomen, niet toegestaan (zoals de pitbullterriër, tosa, Argentijnse dog en fila brasileiro). Ook de volgende rassen zijn niet welkom: de staffordshire-bulterriër, Amerikaanse staffordshireterriër, rottweiler en mastiff.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

The area around the site is well known for growing olives and vines, so it’s a lovely place for a walk or a bike ride, stopping off at small villages and family-run restaurants or shops along the way. Look out for historic buildings like Torre di Lerma (10 minutes’ drive) and Monastero Antico di San Domenico (10 minutes) along the way. The small towns of this part of Puglia are worth a look too – start in Bitonto (10 minutes) to see the cathedral, the 14th-century Torrione Angioino and the Galleria Nazionale della Puglia ‘Girolamo e Rosaria Devanna’, then go over to Palo del Colle (10 minutes) for its churches, piazza and Palazzo Filomarino. Bari (half an hour) is known to many as a transport hub, but it’s worth visiting for its Old Town, fish market, castle and cathedral. There are also some lovely sandy beaches nearby – try Giovanazzo (20 minutes) for a start.
