Italy... Abruzzo... and alpine forests among mighty mountains...? Settle yourself down at Camping Del Sole in Roccaraso for the whole heap. This peaceful family site is between woodlands and mountains in the L'Aquila province, 1,300 metres above sea level and surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of the Po Delta Regional Park: do bring your camera... And your skiing bits and bobs, as it's less than two kilometres from here to the splendid Roccaraso ski resort, the most famed of the Abruzzo resorts and with a full 120 kilometres of piste for you to whizz delightedly down. Several other resorts are within 20 minutes' drive. Del Sole is fably set up for peaceful days off piste, with a playground, volleyball and basketball courts, a ping pong table, a football pitch and a bowling alley to keep all ages entertained, and a barbecue area and sun terrace to ensure alfresco eats and basking – or you could just seek out your own sunny and secluded spot around the roomy grounds. If you cn't be faffed cooking afer a long day out and about (or just because), the lounge bar and restaurant will see you sorted with regional and international eats and drinks. Breakfast is served daily too.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

The site is deep in an area deeply popular for skiing, with the Roccaraso ski resort five minutes' drive away about five kilometres from the surrounding pistes, accessed via the frequent ski buses running from the resort. Three ski lifts in the area will also raise you to the slopes – Monte Pratello within 10 minutes drive, and Pizzalto and Aremogna within 15. Cycling and hiking routes are plentiful around the area, such as those surrounding Pescocostanzo 10 minutes' drive away, as well as the flat and reasonably easy paths around Barrea 35 minutes south west. Barrea's well worth the drive too for the blue waters of Lake Barrea, a small but spectacularly scenic watery expanse for pedalo boating and windsurfing. Venturing west, the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise is 40 minutes from the site; drive on for another 20 minutes to reach Pescasseroli and reams of information at the park's headquarters.
