Can’t decide whether you’d like your Burgundy break to be in a peaceful riverside location or one with easy access to all the amenities of a town centre? Then you need to stay at family-friendly Camping de Charlieu – this wooded nine-acre site is just on the edge of the little town of Charlieu and right on the banks of the Sornin river. That combination means you’ll get plenty of peace and pretty views on the spacious and shaded pitches, and yet there will be a whole lot of shops, bakeries, restaurants and other places to eat about 10 minutes’ walk away. It’s also well worth simply having a wander around the town – officially classified as a ‘village of character’ and one of the Plus Beaux Détours de France (the most beautiful detours in France) – as it’s packed with historic buildings and half-timbered houses. If you don’t fancy walking that far (well, you are on holiday…), it’s handy that there’s a snack bar with a terrace on site – it's open during high season only, for lunch and dinner every day except Tuesday. And for early-morning eats, you can order bread and pastries to be delivered by a village bakery (just place your order a day ahead). Also on site are a play area, table tennis, volleyball and pétanque. For your swims, the site also has a swimming pool (open during the summer only and open to the public). A launderette, a washing-up area and a bathroom block with toilets and showers are on site to make life easy all round.

  • Op deze camping zijn hondenrassen/kruisingen die in de 'lijst met hoog-risico honden op agressief gedrag' zijn opgenomen, niet toegestaan (zoals de pitbullterriër, tosa, Argentijnse dog en fila brasileiro). Ook de volgende rassen zijn niet welkom: de staffordshire-bulterriër, Amerikaanse staffordshireterriër, rottweiler en mastiff.
  • Gasten moeten hun eigen dekbedden, kussens, lakens en handdoeken meebrengen als ze in een huuraccommodatie overnachten. Neem je deze spullen niet mee, dan mag je hier niet blijven.
  • De receptie is onbemand na 18:00. Verwacht je na dit tijdstip aan te komen, breng het park dan hiervan op de hoogte, zodat het team je informatie kan geven over jouw accommodatie.
  • Minderjarigen (18-) dienen te worden vergezeld door een ouder en/of officiële voogd.
  • Minstens één lid van het gezelschap dient 18 of ouder te zijn.
  • Geen houtskoolbarbecues toegestaan.
  • Het buitenzwembad is geopend tussen 08/07 en 27/08 (afhankelijk van de weersomstandigheden).

Heading out to explore your local area is simple from here, as there’s a voie verte path running alongside the Sornin river just next to the site ready for your walks, bike rides or rollerblading outings. Take some time to explore Charlieu too – it’s full of attractive half-timbered houses and lovely places to eat and shop, along with attractions like the Silk Museum and Charlieu Abbey (both within 15 minutes’ walk of the site). The Couvent des Cordeliers (20 minutes’ walk) is also worth a visit, to see the art-filled walls of a former Franciscan monastery. When you're ready to travel a little further afield, you may like to visit Château Saint Hugues (20 minutes’ drive) and the stunning Château de la Roche (35 minutes), built on its own island. Alternatively, soak up more of the rural scenery on a canoe trip along the River Loire from Briennon (15 minutes) or a gentle donkey walk with Bougres d’ânes (20 minutes).
