Pull on your boots, strap on your helmet and warm up those muscles… At Camping La Châtaigneraie, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Anneyron in the Drôme region of Rhône-Alpes, you’re all set to explore.
There are plenty of walking and cycling routes in the area around La Châtaigneraie, but if you’d prefer something (slightly) less strenuous there are easier ways to explore: rent an electric bike on site to take some of the work out of climbing those hills, see it all from a hot air balloon (climb aboard half an hour away) or head to the vélorail at Gorges des Doux for some spiffy views.
Back on site, it’ll be a matter of moments to treat your muscles to some pampering relaxation in the hot tub and sauna before launching into the rest of the activities – let the kids burn off some energy at the playground before the family racks up the points in pétanque, make your way to the games room for billiards, pinball and table football, or simply take a dip in the pool (there’s even a paddling pool for the kids).
When you’re feeling peckish, head to the snack bar for something quick or the restaurant for something more substantial, and stock up on supplies for snacking between meals at the on-site grocery shop or by picking up some bread. If you’d rather cater for yourself entirely, you can grill something up on the barbie or try one of the oodles of restaurants within 10 minutes of La Châtaigneraie.

Start your stay at Camping La Châtaigneraie with a real taste of Rhône-Alpes history: just five minutes’ drive from site, poke around the ruined Château d’Albon, then venture further afield to explore the Jean Gauthier alembic distillery (and taste its wares) and to marvel at Facteur Cheval’s Ideal Palace, a postie’s stunning masterpiece built over 30 years starting in 1879.
Not a history buff? Reward yourself for your patience at the above by making your way to the Valrhona Cité du Chocolat – a chocolate discovery centre that the whole family can enjoy. There’s no need to feel guilty for the indulgence but, if you do, you can burn off the calories at Acrobois treetop adventure park or at the leisure park in St-Pierre-de-Bœuf (try whitewater rafting on the artificial river).
There’s plenty nearby for the kids too: Les Chèvres qui Dansent goat farm is about 20 minutes from La Châtaigneraie and you can meet more exotic animals at Safari de Peaugres half an hour away. Otherwise, bring your mini swashbucklers to Miripili, l’Île aux Pirates for some Peter Pan-themed adventures.
