Renowned for its sandy beaches and watersports, La Tranche-sur-Mer, in the Vendée department of western France, has been dubbed ‘Little California’. On the outskirts of this coastal destination (about 10 minutes’ drive) is Ze Camping at Camping Les Rouillères, a splendidly equipped family-friendly site on the sheltered Pertuis Breton bay. Those who want to embrace a Californian beach lifestyle need to walk only about 200 metres to the nearest expanse of sand, the beach at Les Rouillères, where the waters are shallow and mostly calm.
When the sea is too choppy, you can stay on site and make the most of the heated indoor pool (with a retractable roof). Meanwhile, chances are the kids will have already located the outdoor aquatic centre, complete with a paddling pool and a waterslide. Wondering how you’ll ever manage to persuade them to come out of the pool? You might need to bribe them with the activities on offer at the kids’ club (which runs from early July until the end of August), such as treasure hunts, orienteering races and painting; tempt them with a family game of pétanque; or suggest a bike ride along the splendid Côte de Lumière. Bike hire is available on site.
Guests at Les Rouillères stay in static caravans with air conditioning, kitchenette and dishwasher. There’s a small food shop on site, and plenty of grocery stores and supermarkets in La Tranche-sur-Mer, where you can also sample the local cuisine in varied restaurants.

Stacaravan 2 slaapkamers
Ik was blij met Excellent shower, very comfortable beds, great air conditioning, good sofa, great kitchen - 4 ring gas hob, microwave/oven, large fridge freezer with large freezer section, full sized dishwasher, really lovely veranda, safe and secure carbon and campsite, very quiet campsite, huge heated pool that was never crowded, lovely wall over the dunes to the beach, brilliant situation just outside of La Tranches sur Mer, free bus (night and day) to and from main town.
Ik was niet blij met Front parking area was only half usable - one part was gritted / capable of driving onto. The other part was unattractive, soft, sandy wasteland area which was not a garden and not useable for cars

Green-fingered enthusiasts head to Floral Park Court d'Aron (20 minutes’ drive), which displays plants from all over the globe. Check out the spectacular lotus water garden and the tropical greenhouse, then reward the kids with a visit to the Dinosaur Garden or with a live show featuring princesses, pirates or other beloved characters.
An elegant seaside resort on the Bay of Biscay, Les Sables-d’Olonne (50 minutes) is the starting point of the Vendée Globe yacht race. Pick up what you need for a picnic on the beach at the Marché des Halles Centrales, or check out the seafood restaurants lining the pleasure port.
In La Rochelle (an hour), the imposing Chain Tower guards the entrance to the port. After examining the war-time artefacts on display at Bunker La Rochelle (Museum), cross the three-kilometre bridge leading to Île de Ré, where you can hire a bike and cycle from sandy beach to sandy beach and through a dense forest.
