Some people like to spend plenty of time doing very little on their holidays; others like to pack their days with lots of activity. Whichever camp you fall into – or if your party consists of some from each tribe – you should be well sorted at Camping La Sensation. The caravans at this Nord-Pas-de-Calais site are part of a 22-acre wooded estate that’s also got lots of facilities to keep guests busy throughout their stay (and plenty of space for those who’d rather just chill out in the open air…) The big highlight here is the lake area, which has 12 ponds: one for trout, one shared for carp and another for coarse fishing with a pole, plus nine private trout ponds. Away from the ponds, there are other leisure facilities including a pétanque court, table tennis, a multisports pitch, a play area, a trampoline and an indoor pool with a Jacuzzi open from mid-June to September (just remember to wear your swimming cap and swimsuit, please). Still got more energy? Guests also have access to a sister site 15 minutes’ drive away, which has a whole lot more facilities, including a miniature golf course, tennis courts, a gym, a karting track and a kids’ club. And of course, there’s plenty to do in the local area – perhaps a day at the beach in Le Touquet or some family fun at Dennlys Parc? Back at base, you’ll be staying in a comfy caravan with a well-equipped kitchen (shops are about five minutes' drive away), but there’s also a restaurant on site if you’d rather skip the cooking.

With a whole lot of rides, interactive exhibits and colourful attractions, Dennlys Parc (10 minutes' drive) is a particularly popular pick for family days out nearby. Kids are also likely to enjoy meeting the animals at La Halte d’Autrefois and helping to pedal everyone along an old railway track at Le Rando-Rail (both 25 minutes). If you’d like a taste of the area’s history and traditions, visit the Medieval History Center of Azincourt (15 minutes) take a walk around the ramparts of Montreuil (40 minutes) and look out for markets in places like Hesdin (25 minutes) and Étaples (50 minutes). Day at the beach? Le Touquet (an hour) has a vast beach with soft sand, and it’s also a lovely town to wander through, with pretty streets and a fabulous covered market.
