Whether you’re overnighting after disembarking the Dunkirk ferry (20 minutes’ drive away), or looking for a few days in the gentle countryside of French Flanders, Camping Le Prejoly is a splendid family-friendly spot. It has prime position on the outskirts of handsome, prosperous Hondschoote in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, and is handily five minutes’ drive from the Belgian border for forays to Bruges (45 minutes).
The list of on-site activities is pleasingly long, and appeals to young and old alike, as it ranges from a safe playground, pétanque court and ping-pong table to a games room with pool and pinball machines.
And the fun doesn’t stop there. In high season things really ramp up with exercise classes, a kids’ club and themed nights – think tea dances, karaoke and quizzes – as well as sporting tournaments. Prefer to chill? You can always retreat to the heated swimming pool – it has a retractable glass roof to take care of any cooler/rainy days – or hide away in the relaxing Jacuzzi.
No need to worry about feeding everybody either. You can kick-start your morning with breakfast in the informal bar-creperie, which also supplies a day-long supply of snacks and drinks (both soft and alcoholic). There’s a shower block with disabled amenities and a laundry room to take care of chores too.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
Staying at Camping Le Prejoly puts you in easy reach of the 12th-century wooden windmill at Noord Meulen, which is open for guided tours. The centre of Hondschoote (both five minutes’ drive), also rewards anyone interested in history with its Flemish Renaissance-style City Hall and Église Saint-Vaast; you can book tours of the latter to climb the spiky tower and admire its glittering stained-glass windows.
Bergues (15 minutes) should also be on your sightseeing itinerary for its star-shaped medieval ramparts, soaring UNESCO-listed bell tower and the superb collection of Flemish art in the Museum of the Mont-de-Piété of Bergues. If you want to nip over the Belgian border into Bruges (45 minutes), you can see more great art in the peerless Groeningemuseum.
If the kids are with you, they’ll probably prefer days out on the rollercoasters at Plopsaland Belgium (15 minutes). Back across the border into France, there are gentle rides and carousels suitable for younger children at Dennlys Park (an hour).
