High-class tastes, but only a small holiday budget? Here’s the answer: guests at Camping du Château de Poinsouze stay in the grounds of a gorgeous 15th-century castle in the Creuse countryside five minutes’ drive from Boussac-Bourg. You may feel like you’ve stepped into another world here, with the château’s elegant architecture as a backdrop and plenty of space to relax in the flower-filled gardens and woods. The château has its own lake as well, which makes a lovely spot for a peaceful picnic as well as a place for fishing or splashing about in canoes and pedal boats (available to hire on site). There’s a swimming pool too, of course – and it’s a suitably top-notch one, with a paddling pool, a waterslide and plenty of space to relax on loungers around the poolside. Several play areas have been scattered around the site (with things like a bouncy castle and trampolines), and kids can also spend a bit of quieter time with the resident goats and donkey. Things get pretty active here in the summer – for those that like action-packed days, the site lays on three kids’ activities six days a week in high season (running Sunday-Friday, for ages 4-12), and there are often various games going on up at the sports fields for all ages. On top of this, many practicalities are sorted too – the site has a small grocery shop, a bread ordering service, a laundry area, bike hire and wifi available. The poolside bar opens in summer for drinks and snacks by the water, and the restaurant is open throughout the season for takeaways or meals in an atmospheric converted château outbuilding.

Once you’ve thoroughly explored the grounds of your own château, set off to check out those of some of your near neighbours. Château de Boussac (five minutes’ drive) is a good place to start, with river views and an intriguing art collection, and the fabulous Château de Villemonteix (25 minutes) is equally enticing. For further steps into the past, try Montluçon (40 minutes), which is packed with historic buildings and half-timbered houses, or Aubusson (50 minutes), known as the ‘International Tapestry City’ for its dedication to the traditional art. Outdoor activities nearby might include a round on the 18-hole course at Golf de la Jonchère (20 minutes), watersports and adventure courses at Lac de Sidiailles (25 minutes), having a go on the waterski lift at Pouligny-Notre-Dame (25 minutes) or looking out for wolves at Les Loups de Chabrieres (50 minutes).

Ik was blij met Wow fabulous! Amazingly big pitch. Beautiful scenery, fabulous pool, lovely restaurant, charming staff, great facilities. Absolutely 100% perfect!! 👍🏼👍🏼

Ik was blij met The beauty of this site is the setting of the chateau overlooking the lake, as does the swimming pool, though the water in the pool was cold!
It is a very tranquil site and full of nature, with frogs galore in the lake making a wonderful noise in the evening and bird song each morning. The site is very clean and the pitches are enormous, all surrounded by trees, shrubs and flowers. There are a multitude of butterflies and other pollinators.
It is possible to book bread at the reception for the following morning and there is a bar and restaurant, though we did not use them.
We loved it here and it is everything the website says it is - a wonderful, restful site full of nature.

Ik was niet blij met There is nothing to dislike here, though I imagine if you are looking for a party atmosphere you would not book here
