Ready to get right back to basics and go wild camping five minutes’ drive from the rural hamlet of Publy in the Haut Jura? The off-grid pitches at peaceful and leafy Ferme en Vallière occupy a tree-shaded field in a quiet corner of an Agriculture Biologique (certified organic) market garden; there are 2.5 hectares of meadows, forests, orchards and food-producing areas for you to explore across the property. No-frills amenities stretch to composting toilets in wooden shacks, a shower fed from an agricultural water tank and a washing-up area. Please note there is no drinking water, no electricity and no waste disposal for campers on site. However, there is a communal area encompassing a campfire and large tipi, where you can cook in the evening, hang out under the stars and make new friends with fellow guests. Ferme en Vallière is a handy springboard to mountain hikes and cycle rides in the surrounding fir forest; it’s also close to peaceful Lac de Chalain (25 minutes’ drive) and only half an hour by car from the spectacular Hérisson Waterfalls. And a little secret… lynx are known to roam close by. If you get lucky, you might hear them calling in the night or catch a rare glimpse of them among the trees.

  • Dit is een rustige plek: muziek is strikt verboden.
  • Houd er rekening mee dat de toiletten/douches uniseks zijn.
  • Op deze camping zijn hondenrassen/kruisingen die in de 'lijst met hoog-risico honden op agressief gedrag' zijn opgenomen, niet toegestaan (zoals de pitbullterriër, tosa, Argentijnse dog en fila brasileiro). Ook de volgende rassen zijn niet welkom: de staffordshire-bulterriër, Amerikaanse staffordshireterriër, rottweiler en mastiff.
  • Er is geen receptie ter plaatse: neem bij aankomst contact op met het nummer dat in de reserveringsbevestiging vermeld staat.
  • Minderjarigen (18-) dienen te worden vergezeld door een ouder en/of officiële voogd.

The Haut Jura has plenty of sporty options for active bods; try the walks, hikes and mountain biking trails right from the site. You can also explore on horseback, with treks in the Jura foothills available from the equestrian centre in Chalain (20 minutes’ drive), or have a go at kayaking and paddleboarding on the broad meanders of the River Ain (gear hire is 20 minutes’ drive), keeping your eye out for local birdlife like mute swans and little grebes. There are more watersports available on Lac de Chalain (25 minutes), where you can soak up the sun on sandy beaches, cool off in the clear water and hire paddle boats to explore the shoreline. If you’d rather stay on dry land, rent scooters to whizz down forest tracks circumnavigating the lake. The whole family can have more fun in the fresh air on zipwires and treetop nets at Montciel Aventure (15 minutes). Quieter family-friendly pursuits include discovering the animal sculptures hidden away in the Forêt Fantastique (10 minutes), and the quirky exhibits and colourful advertising posters at La Maison de la Vache Qui Rit (20 minutes) are always guaranteed to raise a smile.
