If you’re planning a stay that will immerse you in Belize’s fabulous natural landscapes, you’ll surely want to make sure your getaway has a minimal impact on the environment, helping to protect it for both wildlife and future visitors. This is where a stay at Hok' Ol Kin comes in – this small family-friendly site mixes up camping and conservation to provide a safe space for both wildlife and weary guests. Great care has been taken here to create a minimal environmental impact, with features such as compost toilets and structures built with locally sourced materials. In keeping with the eco-friendly ethos, facilities here have been kept to just the essentials, but as well as those toilets you’ll also have access to showers, wifi and a communal fridge and freezer (electricity provided from the local grid to provide an uninterrupted supply). Barbecues and campfires are both permitted, and you can pick up supplies for both in San Ignacio (10 minutes’ drive away). Settling down here means being able to soak up some of the peaceful atmosphere of the Belizean countryside, and also having access to all the excellent activities and tours of San Ignacio, a popular tourist hub. Waterfall walks, wildlife encounters, canoe trips, visits to ancient sites… you’ll be in prime position for all of them, and there are several tour companies in town that can help you organise your adventures.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

San Ignacio and its surroundings are well known for the variety of activities and attractions here for visitors. A good place to start nearby is at Bullet Tree Falls (five minutes’ drive), a village with access to the Mopan river for waterside walks or tubing. After that, you may like to see some more of the area’s eco attractions at the Green Iguana Conservation Project (10 minutes) and Belize Botanic Gardens (25 minutes). More of those fabulous landscapes? Book a canoe tour at Barton Creek Cave Reserve (45 minutes), take a jungle trail to marvel at Thousand Foot Falls (an hour) or head underground to see sacrificial remains at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave) (an hour). For more of the area’s historical sights, make plans to visit some of the Mayan ruins that are scattered around the region – on the edge of San Ignacio, Cahal Pech Archeological Reserve (10 minutes) is the closest, but you’ll also be within easy reach of El Pilar Archaeological Site (half an hour) and the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins (40 minutes).
