If you’re off to Ilfracombe and you’re in a self-sufficient motorhome or campervan, you’ll certainly want to take a look at this site. The pop-up site at Ilfracombe Rugby Club is in an excellent location for a trip to the north Devon town – it’s about half a mile from here to the harbour, Damien Hirst’s Verity statue and a whole array of pubs, cafés and shops. Turn in the other direction and a 15-minute walk will take you to Hele Beach for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding or time spend playing on the sand and in the rockpools. There are lots of other coastal strolls direct from the site too – and with the prospect of a pint or a meal at the atmospheric Thatched Inn (five minutes’ walk away) on your return. As you may have guessed, pitches here are based on the club’s rugby field – and that means you’ll be staying on level flat ground, with space to put up your awning for a bit of shelter. The whole field is sheltered by trees though, so you shouldn’t get too much of that coastal breeze despite being able to see the sea. This is a simple pop-up site so don’t expect too much by way of facilities – there’s a play area a couple of minutes’ walk away though, and the site has a water tap and a place to empty portable toilets. Please note that there are no guest toilets or showers here, so you’ll need to have your own on-board bathroom.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Lovely Ilfracombe is full of things to do – get active with paddleboarding, scuba diving and coastal walks or take it easy with a visit to the aquarium, the museum and a wander along the art trail and out to the seaside Verity statue. There are also boat trips from here to Lundy Island, along with sea safaris and sea fishing trips. You’ll be able to walk from the site to Hele Beach, but of course that’s not the only beach option around – surfers will certainly want to try the waves at Woolacombe (15 minutes’ drive), while swimmers head to the more sheltered Combe Martin (10 minutes). Elsewhere along the coast, spend the day at Watermouth Castle (five minutes), visit Lynton and Lynmouth (35 minutes) for the cliff railway or take a walk at the Valley of Rocks (40 minutes). Family excursions might take you to places like Exmoor Zoo (25 minutes), The BIG Sheep (45 minutes) or The Milky Way Adventure Park (55 minutes) – all good options for a treat for the kids.
