Listening to the soothing soundtrack of the Lake District is a favourite pastime at Gilpin Mill – and what a gorgeous little spot the owners have given their guests for that very activity. There’s just the one shepherd’s hut at this Cumbria site, 20 minutes’ drive from Kendal, and it’s set up for adult guests only – so you’ll have plenty of space all to yourselves. The hut has been parked in its own private garden area, where you can sit out with a cup of tea or get a barbecue going with the sounds of the sheep in the next field and the River Gilpin running close by. The surroundings are of course rather lovely, but so is the interior. A cosy double bed with good-quality bedding is a highlight, as is a woodburning stove to keep things nice and warm. An ensuite bathroom with shower (and towels provided), a mini kitchen (with kettle, toaster, crockery, glasses etc) and an electrical point with two USB ports add to the list of facilities, and there’s also bottled drinking water to make sure you’ve got a safe supply. No doubt you’ll already have clocked that the Lake District is an excellent place for outdoor activities – and this site is well set for including plenty of them on your itinerary. Windermere is about 10 minutes’ drive away for watersports and boat trips, and there are plenty of places nearby for walking, climbing, golf and cycling too (with safe bike storage on site if you need it). If your top activity is walking or cycling to a country pub, you’ll be pleased to hear that the nearest is a 40-minute stroll away across fields.

Rustige herdershut met prachtig uitzicht en gezellige inrichting. Gasten prijzen de comfortabele bedden, houtkachel, vuurplaats en gastvrouw Jo. Geweldig voor wandelingen, dicht bij Windermere/Kendal. Smalle toegangswegen dragen bij aan de sfeer. Zeer aanbevolen!

Ik was blij met We stayed here for a week for our honeymoon and it was just the perfect escape. It was so peaceful and quiet with just the sounds of the little stream nearby.
Jo the host was welcoming and generous and the space had been well thought out and designed.
The hut is in the perfect location for travelling to all the key towns in the lakes whilst also being able to go walking straight from your door step.
10/10 would recommend to anybody, we will definitely be back.

Ik was blij met So peaceful, the perfect get-away-from-it-all retreat. Good walking right from the doorstep, yet only 15 minutes into Kendal or Windermere.
The Brown Horse pub in Winster was a pleasant 40 minute stroll away cross-country and served superb food and beer. The hut was clean, tastefully decorated and well kitted out. Jo, the hostess was lovely and welcoming, as were her two dogs. All round a fabulous place to be.

Ik was blij met Surely the most peaceful place to stay in the lakes. Everything was so well maintained, the host was amazing and we had a completely undisturbed weekend away. It really was lovely, so pleased to have been able to stay at this hut.

Ik was blij met Where do I start!! This place is absolutely beautiful! The hut is super clean and cosy and very very secluded!exactly wot we were hopeing for! The woodturning stove was fabulous and kept us toasty warm! The location is absolutely superb. Our host Jo was so welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed for our relaxing stay! We enjoyed a beautiful meal cooked on the fire pit outside as the weather was beautiful. The bed was extremely comfortable with beautiful decor! This place will now allways be my go to place for absolute relaxation.
Thanks so much to Jo for our fabulous stay and we will see you again for sure.

Ik was blij met Everything. Beautifully created Shepherds Hut - the woodburner kept us cosy and warm - plenty of wood - Jo, our host, checked we were ok when Storm Ashley came in, even offering us a bedroom in the farmhouse if things got scary! so kind of her. Nearest pub, The Brown Horse, an easy 35 minute walk away, serving delicious food. Windermere 10 mins drive away. Lanes very narrow so go carefully - but this adds to special feeling of this wonderful place.

Ik was blij met Everything in the hut was well thought-out and of high quality.
Wonderfully peaceful - all we could hear was the water and the sheep.
There is lovely walking straight from the hut and spectacular walking just a short drive away.

All set to see the lakes? Start your exploration at Windermere (10 minutes’ drive), where you can see the scenery from a boat trip, head out on a paddleboard or canoe, or take a walk to some renowned viewpoints (Brant Fell, just above the town of Bowness-on-Windermere, is a good choice). Not far from the lake’s edge are the pretty Arts-and-Crafts house Blackwell and the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, where you can learn all about the life of one of the area’s most loved former residents. For more historic outings, try Levens Hall or Sizergh Castle (both 20 minutes). Setting your sights a little further afield, you could also head over to Coniston Water (40 minutes), take a walk around Tarn Hows (45 minutes) or make a trip to Rydal Water (half an hour) to combine lakeside views with a climb to Rydal Cave. Predator Experience - Wolf Experience (25 minutes) and tours of Hawkshead Brewery (15 minutes) are good options for a change of pace.
