Peace, quiet and a great swathe of outdoor space await for guests at Rowan Tree Paddock – there’s just the one cabin at this Northumberland site, so you’ll have the entire one-acre paddock all to yourselves. (Well, apart from friendly and inquisitive goats Herbie and Beau, who are always keen to meet new visitors…) This is a particularly gorgeous cabin, in an unusual barrel shape with a bedside window that looks out over the paddock – meaning you can gaze out at the scenery while still tucked up in bed. It’s a cosy and comfy setup inside the cabin, with a double bed, a seating area and storage space. Outside, a covered deck means you can sit out even when it’s a bit chilly, and it’s a short walk to a portable toilet and sink. Cooking facilities are out in the open too – you’ll have access to a mini barbecue and associated kitchenware (but please note there’s no fridge, as this is an off-grid location). Barbecue supplies can be picked up at the farm shop 10 minutes’ walk away, which also has a café serving up meals and snacks throughout the day. There’s also an Indian restaurant within walking distance, and a petrol station with a shop; Morpeth’s shops and supermarkets are 10 minutes’ drive away. Being off grid, this is a fabulous spot for a digital detox, spending your time stargazing and listening to owls hoot rather than scrolling social media (although there is a battery-powered USB charging point if you need it…)

The entrance to Rowan Tree Paddock is directly off Station Road opposite Birchwood. The wooden gate is signposted Rowan Tree Paddock. Do not drive along the private access road. Enter via the wooden gate and park on the woodchip.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Countryside and coastal walks are good ways to fill your days around here – for the former, head out into Plessey Woods Country Park (five minutes’ drive) or Bolam Lake Country Park (20 minutes). Northumberlandia (10 minutes) is another good pick, centred around a giant soil sculpture of a reclining woman, or you may like to stroll around Bide-a-Wee Cottage Garden (15 minutes) or Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (20 minutes). For the coast, it’s a 20-minute drive to the colourful beach huts (and excellent fish and chips) of Blyth or half an hour to Alnmouth, close to both Alnwick Castle and Howick Hall Gardens and Arboretum. Other days out might take you into Newcastle upon Tyne (25 minutes) to see the Tyne Bridge, tour the museums or head underground at Victoria Tunnel. Alternatively, stick to the stunning countryside with hikes in Northumberland National Park (half an hour).

Beau’s Barrel campingpod

Ik was blij met: Lovely stay in Beau’s Barrel. Comfy bed, cosy indoor and under canopy outdoor seating. All the kitchen equipment you need to use the outdoor kitchen. The most enjoyable bit was the exclusive use of the 1 acre paddock. So peaceful and quiet as the barrel is the only accommodation on this site. The added bonus we spotted the resident barn owl. Will return for an off grid adventure with the kids in the summer holidays.
