Mount Cook Adventure Centre has a pop-up site that’s as handy for Peak District explorations as it is for the various activities that can be booked there on at the centre. This Derbyshire spot is about a mile from Wirksworth and in prime position for bike rides on the High Peak Trail, watersports at Carsington Water, thrills at Alton Towers and all sorts of hikes and strolls. Or, as the name suggests, you could stick around on site for adventurous antics: activities that can be booked on arrival (for an extra charge) include sessions on the low ropes course (a great test of agility and teamwork) and the adrenaline spikes of a ride on the rooftop zipwire, which will speed you down to the on-site quarry at about 40 miles per hour. If your nerves need a bit of a rest after all that, you may be pleased to hear that there are rather more sedate outings in the area too, including days at Chatsworth (25 minutes’ drive away) or pottering around the shops and museums of Matlock Bath (five minutes away). Whatever you get up to by day, back at base you’ll be staying on grass pitches that have access to shared toilets and showers, a washing-up area and a wifi connection. Camping stoves and barbecues are welcome as long as you’re careful with them, and it’s also possible to book breakfast to set you up for the day well. Please be aware of a few house rules for this site: no dogs or hen/stag parties are allowed on site, and under-18s must be supervised by an adult.
